Our heartfelt condolences from the Myers-Lawson School of Construction and its Department of Building Construction,
Building Construction Committee Chair, Steve Daves (President of RW Murray), served with JJ on the Virginia Chapter Executive Board of the Associated Builders and Contractors in the 2005-2010 time frame. According to Steve, "JJ was extremely intelligent and forward thinking about all aspects of the construction industry. He was passionate about being involved in the industry and was always looking for ways to make the industry a better place. He was constantly seeking ways to guide the younger people entering the industry by creating and developing opportunities to expand their path of learning and growth. He loved sharing his knowledge with others. He was extremely detail oriented in his work responsibilities and passionate about Virginia Tech – especially football."
Additionally, Professor Thom Mills reflects that "JJ was someone the student constructors consortium group could count on to come to Blacksburg and engage with students. He was always friendly and happy to talk with students and faculty alike, and provided internships and other valuable advice and experience. He wanted to share as much as learn. He was an early and big proponent of Design/Build.
JJ was a donor to Bishop-Favrao Hall. His recognition can be found on Professor Tanyel Bulbul's office window. JJ's message to the students..."GO BUILD YOUR FUTURE!"
The world will miss this kind and gentle giant but our students will continue JJ's legacy by building their future while giving back.

J.J. Was a treasured cousin. I have known him for all of his too short 57 years. As kids we were always excited to visit his family and looked forward to our trips east to see Uncle Johnny, Aunt Yvette and their beautiful family. When they came to Michigan to visit us, it was a special event. J.J. Has always been the rock of our family, ready with a kind word, a sweet smile and help in any way that was needed. His parents were so proud of him and told us of all his accomplishments as he grew up and sailed through school. As J.J. And I were in similar lines of work, it was so interesting to hear about the projects he was involved in and we loved driving around visiting buildings and looking at the architecture in whatever city we were visiting.
We will miss his comforting presence, his intellect, and his work in researching our family genealogy. He loved his Irish heritage and got many of his relatives to visit Ireland in 2012 for his wedding and a trip of a lifetime. Our memories all good ones and we look forward to sharing a good story again with our beloved friend in heaven.

JJ you were truly a great man – superior in your abilities and a pleasure to know. What a positive impact you had on the people that you worked alongside, the clients you supported, and the Washington, DC Metro construction industry as a whole. You led by example, tirelessly. You were the consummate construction professional, who always had an effective solution. You gave your teams confidence and success. Your no-nonsense, calm, and steady demeanor reassured us while helping us to effectively navigate very tricky and challenging situations, which seemed boundless at times. You never spoke a negative word about anyone or anything. Always going about your business with a reassuring laugh, even on a bad joke told by a colleague. Your departure leaves a big hole in our hearts and universe. Rest in peace great man. God bless and strengthen your family and friends who now grieve your loss.
With much sympathy,
John Barron, JJ’s Co-worker at Tishman

JJ was a wonderful person, a construction professional with an infectious laugh. His expertise in preconstruction services made him an early leader in the design-build movement. He always had a smile on his face, and he could light up a room. I first met him at the University of Florida, as he was graduating with his Masters Degree. What a great person. I will miss him. God bless Tara and JJ's entire family and his vast world of friends.
With sympathy,
Tanya Matthews
