Obituary of Dianne (Dody) Pruett Martin

Dianne (Dody) Thyra Pruett Martin (Age 91)

Born on June 9, 1930, in Minneapolis, MN along with her best friend and twin sister, Donna Fink, Dody died peacefully in Ashburn, VA on March 2, 2022.  She was the daughter of Helga Westergaard and Donovan Martin and the adopted daughter of Søren Lura.

Preceding her in death are her first husband, Samuel Pruett in 1999, her second husband, Dr. John O. Martin in 2019, son Charles Pruett in 2007, stepson John O. Martin Jr. in 2010, and sister Donna Fink in 2014. 

She is survived by one son, James Pruett (Brenda) of Collierville, TN, one daughter, Sarah Shamlal (Sunil) of Vienna, VA, six grandchildren (Lorien Peer (Sam), Jonathan Pruett (Ashlie), Carter Pruett, Emerson Pruett, Sumaire Shamlal, and Sabir Shamlal), and seven great grandchildren (Gracie Quigley (Liam), Hannah Peer, Benjamin Peer, Sarah Peer, Alexis Pruett, Jenna Pruett, and Addison Pruett).

Dody is also survived by three stepchildren, Tim Martin (Kathy) of Newark, DE, Michael Martin of Vienna, VA, and Peggy Suggs (George) of Myrtle Beach, SC, four step-grandchildren (Anne Martin, Jennifer Martin, Stacie Smith (Andy), and Eric Martin), and four step-great grandchildren. 

Dody was a member of First Christian Church in Hagerstown, MD and sang in the Sanctuary Choir for many years.  She was a member of the Embroiderer’s Guild of Hagerstown and the Washington, DC Chapter.  Dody was a member and Past President of the Vienna Women’s Club in Virginia.  She was a member of Vienna Presbyterian Church and Circle 2.

Dody received a degree in Home Economics from the University of Maryland in 1951.  She worked at DJ Fabrics in Hagerstown, MD and was a Real Estate Paralegal for many Hagerstown area law firms.

Visitation will be held at Farmwell Hall at Ashby Ponds Senior Living Community in Ashburn, VA on March 18, 2022, at 9:30am followed by a memorial service at 10:30am.  Interment will take place the next day at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Bluefield, WV.
