Our dear friend Bharatiya passed away in the early hours of this morning. I have received a text message from Purnima Bhabhi a short while ago.
There is nobody in our cohort who was not touched by the loving heart of Veer Bharatiya. Each one of us has many memorable experiences. I do need not enlist great qualities and tell that what a wonderful person he was. I would, however, say that he loved life and always spread cheer around him. He was fun loving. The room was always full of laughter where he was present.
Now he is not among us but I imagine what he would say: “There was no time to say goodbye. But this I ask – please do not cry. Remember me as you think best. Remember the happy times, forget the rest.”
I met Bharatiya in September 1973 at the entrance of Ashdown House for the first time. He was then newly elected President of Sangam. He wasted no time to induct me. That was nearly half a century ago. Veer leaves behind a rich collection of memories for us which we will continue to cherish.
Our prayers continue for Veer Bharatiya to be in eternal peace. I envision him already enriching his surroundings there.

Very sorry to know.
I had the pleasure of meeting Veer Chacha ji on multiple occasions. His professional achievements are an inspiration to anybody who wants to understand what it takes to be successful. However, it is his ability to connect to people and his benevolence which really stand out. He would, ostensibly, be equally at ease sitting in a roadside tea stall in India, or chairing a board meeting in the US.
I remember the 'apple dance' which he made us do in Saurabh's wedding and the hilarious photos which resulted from the event. His presence lit up the room.
A good captain of a ship needs a good crew. And Veer chachaji had the best team behind him - Shyam chachaji, Purnima chachi, Poonam chachi. Their exceptionally bright children made it all worthwhile.
Veer chachaji leaves behind a legacy, which will be carried forward ably by the team. He will be very much missed and very much cherished.
Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Veer, my younger brother , was an unassuming person . He never bragged about , what he has done to the family . But his presence around itself was always a very comforting and soothing feeling .
He always sorted out all issues in a very cool and effective manner.
I am reminded of an incident , way back . Saurabh , my son had just returned back home in Delhi , with his bride after ceremonies . A group of eunuchs , who traditionally visit households with newly wedded bride to seek money in lieu of their blessings to newly wedded couple .Amount expected by the eunuch group was very high and unreasonable . Eunuch group announced that they will curse the couple, if their expectations are not met . Veer enters the scene . Talks to eunuch in private .
And lo – they now insist upon showering their choicest blessings on the entire family with their rituals . Till today , I do not know what magic was done by Veer .
Veer, whenever he noticed any old and unattractive decoration piece in our house, will remove it, throw it away and replace it with a new piece , purchased by him from market .
Even today , I can attribute a large number of decorations in my house to Veer ,
Veer gave a high priority to family needs and always sacrificed his personal preferences for that .
We all remember him as most jovial , social and loveable person of the family .

Dear Poonam, Wagish & Manish
It is impossible to express my sorrow at this moment. Veer Vrat was a person, who took special care to keep me and everybody else around happy .He helped and guided me to take care of children like an elder brother. I will always remember his help , in my social interactions .
I strongly wanted him to stay in India but fate took him to USA .
I will miss him a lot throughout my life.
May God give us strength to bear this unrecoverable loss to the family

I first met Veer in 2004 at his family reunion in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. My Son, Aaron was about to become engaged to Veer's niece Sugandha. Veer, as the "Patriarch" of the family had to give his approval. On a long walk with Veer on the beach we talked about our business careers in IT and the pluses and minuses of being a business owner. We both discovered we were self made men (although his background story topped mine).
He was a good listener and was effusive in his love for Suga. There and then we both agreed this was going to be a "good match" even though it wasn't arranged!
We saw him infrequently even in Washington D.C. when his Son got married.
My take away was and is.....Veer was smart and capable, but even more importantly a kind and caring man. As we say in the Hebrew traditions" May he Rest In Peace and May his Memory be everlasting".

When someone of Veer's stature passes, it is truly a loss for all. We pray for strength for the family at this very difficult time. Hearing all the accolades from Wagish and Manish, his older brother and colleagues and lifelong friend, all I can say is "What a Man" He brightened the lives of all who were fortunate to know him. He lived his best life and radiated positive energy. The whole world was his family. “Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.” Rabindranath Tagore
Purnima ji and family, we share in your sadness and grief as you bid farewell to a great soul. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti

So sad to hear this news. I am truly grateful for the way Veer chacha opened his home to me as a student looking for work experience. His (and the rest of the family's) hospitality was faultless and he was always a joy to be around. I learned a lot in those weeks, and am thankful for the time I got to spend with him. Veer was generous to a fault, a can do, will do person, full of life, full of fun. We shared an apartment for a year during 1973-74 while at MIT. Veer had a turn-table and we would listen to Sarod by Ali Akbar Khan endlessly. I stayed for a couple of months at his home in Jungpura in New Delhi when I returned to India in 1977 and was looking for a job: such a loving family they were: his parents, siblings and sister in law.
Rest In Peace Veer! Will always cherish memories of the time we spent together ...
My deep condolences to Purnima whom I met only at their wedding and to the entire family.

Growing up on Jeffersonian Court we were surrounded by kids our age. Everyday after school we would play outside until our parents would call us into our respective houses for dinner, baseball was a heavy favorite of ours. We also were privileged to have some of the neighborhood father's come out and play baseball, I wilI always remember when Veer uncle would step up to bat. The sensation probably was reminiscent of when the great Babe when he would step up to the plate and point his bat to the outfield, over the wall and into home run territory. With one hand on the bat Veer uncle would literally rip the felt off the ball with one swing and yet another good game ball would be lost to the woods forever. All the kids would stare with their mouths hanging open. Parents who were out watching us play would chuckle and Veer uncle would walk around the bases laughing wholeheartedly. He was greatness through and through and I loved him very much. Ram Nam Satya Hai.

My anecdotes….
July 1989: Sanjiv my husband and my two sons move to Virginia from Ottawa, Canada.
We found a home and we became neighbours.
Purnima and Veer Ji became friends. We instantaneously got close . It was as though we had known each other from a previous life. If we did not see each other during the day, we would call to say, “just pop your face out from the front door” and two minute hand wave made us comfy.
Kaunteya our older son and Wagish attended the same elementary school and the same class. So there was activity happening continuously and children running in and out of our homes. Our son Nitya and Manish played together. Our front doors were never locked.
My memories with them were filled with laughter, fun and constant giving.
Our families drove to New Orleans with Dolly and Anil Bhandari and we spent time with Veer ji’s older brother. What a spectacular trip, that was. Thankfully we did not get speeding tickets because Anil was there to caution Veer Ji.
Subsequently, we (Bhartiya & Nundy families) drove to New Hampshire and spent time with Sham(his younger brother)and Poonam. Another trip filled with laughter, and cherishable memories.
The very first time, just a few days after we had settled, in our home. Purnima and Veerji invited us for supper. Also to introduce us to some of their charming friends.
We were asked to reach by six. So when we rang the door bell, at sharp six. Veer Ji was pleasantly surprised. I figured out later on, why he was surprised, and that was because he was one person famous to come late.
Sanjiv and I caught on to this quite early, so we would always tell him to come half hour before, the time given to others. And yes that worked.
He would always have a big spread of vegetarian food. It was like no vegetable should be left out, which was being sold at the Indian store. Yes that was him. He loved shopping & he loved good food. If the food prepared was tasty, they would just break out loudly with this statement “Oyee oyee oyee oyee oyee””. Khanna tau oyee oyee oyee oyee,” & If Anil Bhandari was present, this incident was a must.
So after seeing the spread I told Purnima that she worked real hard.
Veer Ji wittily jumped in the midst of our conversation and said, “I’ve been cooking till the wee hours of the morning, while your friend has been sleeping and today also had her afternoon nap” I was so new to this trickster side of him, I believed him, he was so convincing. I felt terrible for him. And Purnima was smiling cause she knew another person was being teased and made his victim.
I could go on regaling you with anecdotes. But he was my most huggable, lovable neighbour. I miss him.
But the next time Veer Ji, when we meet up,
I won’t get cornered by your mischievous side.
Loved you Veer Ji and still love you.

One word that describes Bhartiyaji for us is "Humbleness"! He hardly ever talked about himself, the prestigious school he went to and the successful venture he had. Bhartiyaji was a true friend, a good listener and fun to be with. We cherished the memories of visiting him every time we were in Washington and his visit to Fort Wayne! We will miss you, Bhartiyaji, your unique sense of humor and welcoming nature,

July’ 89 to Jun’ 92 was probably the happiest time of my life. I moved to Virginia on a posting, promptly rented a house and met Veerji, whom we had as a neighbour. My boys Kaunteya and Nitya chummed up with Wagish and Manish; and Shobhna found a confidant and friend in Purnimaji. I, of course, found an older brother and a man whom I deeply respected. That was Veerji.
When I speak of human success and achievements: I think and speak of him: the vision that he lent; his strength of conviction in the ability of people around him; his humility in dealing with people; his humour in handling difficult situations; his innocence in learning something new; his gentleness in talking to people and his genius in his thought process and in the ideas he conceived. Veerji epitomized life and the joy of living to the fullest and he did so with the innocence and honesty of a child - each new day bigger and better than the last. “Yeh jawani ka takaza hai “ he claimed and moved on.
On a personal note he was an older brother to me - in the wisdom he imparted with gentility and kindness always making it seem as though the final idea or thought arrived at was mine own.
He had a wonderful, sweet, innocent sense of humour with a smile ready to breakout into a wide grin, followed with a high five, slap on the hands or a tight hug.
He was powerfully strong, with hands like bricks, which he used with great discretion..... for in his heart he was gentle, soft, caring, kind and meek.
I have the sweetest memories of him as he was a very important person in my life and in the lives of my children.
I loved him and I will miss him forever.
I write with pain in my heart and as I reminisce - I realize that we have lost a star but the heavens have gained a new one. I cannot begin to imagine this world without Veerji as he begins his new journey to the other world.
In the Bhagwad Gita - Krishna says: Every creature in the universe is subject to rebirth, Arjuna, except the one who is united with me. Veerji is united - of that I am sure.

Indeed this is such a great loss not only to friends and family but to humanity. I met Veer on my arrival at MIT as a student when I was looking for a place to stay. And like it is popularly known about Veer, the moment I met him he welcomed me to his shared apartment and we became roommates. Little was I to know that we would become soul mates for the rest of our lives.
As chance would have it, I had just moved into Washington DC in 1983 and Veer migrated soon thereafter and my wife Dolly and I had the privilege to host him in our apartment before his family joined him. We were once again roommates for the journey of our lives.
Veer, Purnima, Wagish, and Manish and Dolly, Ekta, Neeta, and I grew up together, shared almost all moments of joy and sadness, fun and play, dreams and visions, philosophy and realism. And why not, Veer was Godfather to Ekta when she was born in Boston while we were at MIT and remained so through her life and indeed the lives of hundreds more.
Veer never knew anything negative in life - he was gifted in remaining positive, always, with his signature expression in Punjabi "Gham ni lana, saab thikk ho jay ga"... "Don't worry, all will be well", he always said it, meant it, and lived with it.
Those whom God loves, die young, it is said. We thank the Almighty for sharing Veer with us. May your soul rest in eternal peace, mere dost.... Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.
