Obituary of Edith Helma Palmer
EDITH HELMA PALMER Edith Helma Palmer, 81, of Reston, VA, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2022, at her home. She was born to the late Herta and Josef Prinz on October 3, 1940, in Vienna, Austria. Edith married George Bruce Palmer III (Bruce) in 1964, and they lived togeth- er in Washington, DC and Reston, VA. She became a U.S. citizen in 1972.
Edith is survived by three children: George Bruce Palmer IV, of Reston, VA; Julia Palmer Winkler, of Winnetka, IL; and Francie Palmer Hammer, of Denver, CO. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Ellie Winkler, Becky Winkler, Charlie Hammer, and Spencer Hammer. Edith was predeceased by husband Bruce in 1985 and brother Günter in 2013.
Edith received a J.D. from the University of Vienna in 1963, and an M.S. in comparative law from George Washington University in 1972. She was a civil servant in the European Law Division of the Library of Congress for over 40 years, finishing service as the Chief. She spoke six modern European languages and Latin. An avid amateur musician, Edith participated in several choirs, including the Thomas Circle Singers. Other interests included ballet, cats, cooking, hiking, skiing, and yoga. She passed her appreciation of lifelong learning to all her children. She was loved and will be missed immensely.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 12, 2022 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston, VA. Edith will be buried alongside her husband the following week at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 10:00 AM.
