I had the honor of taking care of Grace many times in the hospital. I was her respiratory therapist, and we did more talking with one another than breathing treatments. We talked about our struggles, our victories, and our faith in God! God often puts people in our life at the exact time we need them! We felt this way often. She was a bright light during my long night shifts at the hospital, and I will miss our talks. She was a strong, faith filled, lovely woman!

Grace was the first person I met when I moved to Reston in 1978. She was not only kind but energetically invested in making sure I found the right resources for the emotional and spiritual recovery in which I was engaged. We had lots of occasions to share over the years, and I always thought of her as one of God's special gifts, to remind us that unconditional love is the most powerful force on earth. Thanks, Grace, for helping me to believe that, and be open to the grace-filled visitations of angels, who bring comfort, hope and love. Though I was away in the the Middle East during your funeral, I always carry you in my heart.

Dear Ed, Nicholas and all family and friends of Grace,
Grace was a dear friend. I loved her stories about growing up in New York. Her stories often shaped some learning for me. She kept up on what was happening in the world either by way of the New York Times or the news on TV. I came to know Grace through taking a class at Saint John Neumann called Just Faith when we read many books, met and discussed our response to the readings. Grace’s connections were helpful and interesting. Grace had a strength and spirit that few people have. In her time, her handicap was to define her. This could not happen for Grace. Her brain and strength much more communicated what she was all about. Grace, my prayers include my love and respect for you. Thank you, Grace, for being my friend.

Thinking of Grace, this came to my heart:
Grace
“Absent from the body
Is present with the Lord”—-
Her soul has gone to heaven,
Her last but best reward.
Yet we on earth do mourn her,
And for a time we will.
But in our minds and hearts
Her spirit lingers still.
We hear her laughter, see her smile,
Our memory of her stays.
Her eyes shine bright inside our minds,
Her love, and stylish ways.
She gave her all while here on earth—
Her wisdom, kindness, grace.
And now God gets her company
In that most awesome place.
Absent from the body
Is present in God’s realm.
Though not on earth, it seems to me
Grace still is at the helm—
The lives she touched, the wisdom shared,
The laughter and the tears.
Adventures done, and now at rest.
We’ll ever hold her dear.
It’s not goodbye, its just farewell,
So long, but until then
May you, my friend, be richly blessed,
Until we meet again.

A Letter from Christine Hyland
I’ve lost a dear friend. Praying the angels are welcoming her home. I always admire people who meet life’s next challenge with all their heart. That was Grace.
My daughter Caitlin, a high school student, and I began volunteering to assist local Afghan families in 2008. For many years I consulted on fund development and communications. The USCCB’s Migration and Refugee Services was a client of many years. When I read the local Arlington MRS call for volunteers in the St. John Neumann Church bulletin, I felt a call to serve refugees directly. We met the Afghan family (names withheld), the mom, dad, a taxi driver, and their four children then: three daughters and a baby brother. Another brother later joined the family. Caitlin and I went weekly to visit, providing small lessons on money, school, health issues, baking cakes and cookies, and answering any questions.
In 2009, I was asked to serve as executive director for a new nonprofit in Fairfax County serving the elderly and disabled. As this was a full-time job, I knew my Afghan friends needed more help. My friendship with Grace was an answer to my prayer. We moved here in 1988; my mom always commented about the stylish lady we’d see at mass, Grace. In 2009, at a community event, I introduced myself. While chatting several months later, I told her of my new position and concern for the Afghan family. She said, “I’ll help” . . . and how! She taught the family how to ride the bus to the library and got them all cards. She tutored the mother in English and answered all questions that the family might have. She was their friend, their champion. We had a spring picnic complete with an egg hunt. The kids went to summer camp and learned to swim. All holidays were celebrated. Grace provided wise advice and mentoring and was so proud when they became citizens. That friendship continued. The eldest daughter and her mom visited and called often. The father once commented that Grace was a wise, beloved grandmother. Grace enjoyed the daily challenges of helping them. She would get frustrated with the bureaucratic nonsense, but she never gave up. She pointed the way forward. Women should achieve. Today the eldest daughter is a GMU grad, and her younger sisters are studying for their degrees. The mother drives, has a job she enjoys, and laughs often. That made Grace very happy. She was their angel on earth, and I believe she’ll continue to watch from heaven.
