Obituary of Brenda Louise Black

Dr. Brenda Louise Black, EdD, 82 of Sterling, Virginia passed away at home on September 1, 2022. 

Born in Brinkley, Arkansas on April 13, 1940, Brenda is the only child of Frances and Albert Brent. 

As a child her family relocated to Des Moines Iowa and there she graduated from North High School. Brenda continued her education in Des Moines and graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's degree in Education. After relocating to Dallas Texas, she would go on to attend Texas Women’s University and complete her Master's and Doctoral degrees in education. 

Brenda was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

For over 40 years, Brenda worked tirelessly as an educator. She began her career serving schools in Kansas City, MO as an Elementary teacher and trainer / mentor for student teachers. She relocated to the Dallas metro area after some time and was there the remainder of her career. In Dallas she served in many capacities: Teacher, Vice Principal, and Dean of education within Dallas Public Schools. She took special pride in her roles that helped train the next generation of educators as well as her volunteer work with underserved kids helping them get the extra skills needed to pass critical exams and stay on the right path. Teaching was her calling and helping children was her life’s passion.

From her union to Arthur P. Black (deceased), she is survived by their three children, Arthur R. Black of Dallas ,TX; Ressie L. Black of Ft. Worth, TX and Franklin A. Black of Sterling, VA, seven grandchildren, Candyce Black-Wells, Braxton Black, Patrick Black, Cecile Black, Trey Harlin, Aurelio Sanchez, and Rayan Black, and 10 great grandchildren.

Viewing and Visitation will be held at the Adams Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Virginia on Wednesday Sept. 7, 2022 from 5 PM to 8 PM.

Memorial services will be held at Skyline Branch Dallas Public Library on October 1, 2022 @ 11:00 am.

Memorial donations may be made in Brenda's name to the American Cancer Society or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
