Robert Thompson Mills, often known as Bob, passed away while watching football on Sunday November 20th in Wyncote, PA.  After overcoming a rough battle with cancer, he was blessed with enjoying another ten years of cheerful life with family and friends.

Bob was a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon in the early 1960’s while the family lived in Northern Virginia.  In the late 1960’s he moved his family to Richmond, VA where he lived most of his adult life.

Bob was a self-made man. After graduating from Washington-Lee High School (Arlington, VA) in 1956, he soon began following his passion for architecture.  As a young married man, he started his career as a surveyor, and then ventured into real estate development. He would routinely draw the floor plans for homes of his dreams, including one he eventually built in Doswell, VA.  As a compulsive social butterfly, he always cultivated trusted relationships with clients, investors, government officials, and especially tradespeople, since he knew their collective dedicated commitment was key to a project’s success. As vice president of Area Development Corporation, he was instrumental in building numerous shopping centers throughout VA, NC, MD, and DE as a preferred developer for Food Lion and Rite-Aid, as well as coordinating a major retail renovation of historic Main Street train station in Richmond in the late 1980s.

As a proud Virginian, he was naturally an avid fan of the Washington Redskins/Commanders and Nationals, as well as a sportsman that enjoyed hunting and fishing, skiing, playing tennis, traveling, and biking.  His favorite summer passions were driving across the countryside or planting his toes in a sandy beach and soaking in the warm sun, especially at Virginia Beach.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Deb Campbell (Kerry), son Robert T. Mills Jr. (Diane), grandsons Jake and Bradley Campbell, sister Joyce Ann Wolfe, nephews, nieces, and many dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Association for Cancer Research, to continue finding cures for the disease that nearly took him away from us too soon in life.
