Obituary of Robert Clare Bornmann

Dr. Robert Clare Bornmann (USN), 91, of Reston, VA passed away at the INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital on December 6th, 2022.  Dr. Bornmann was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston, WV, Harvard College, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.  He served for 27 years in the United States Navy, including stations in Antarctica, the US Navy Diving School, the Deep Sea Diving School, the Royal Naval Physiological Laboratory, and the Navy Medical Research and Development Command.   He was the Deputy Medical Officer for the US Navy Deep Submergence Systems Project, working on SEALAB III and developed the protocols for saturation diving and decompression tables still used today.  He was one of the original members of Good Shepherd Lutheran church in Reston. He served as an elder and enjoyed his monthly luncheons.  He loved adventure and travel. He traveled extensively throughout his life and made many long lasting friends.  He was a passionate reader with a penchant for history and had over 4500 books in his library. He is survived by his daughters Kristin, Elizabeth, and Jennifer, his son John, eight grandchildren, five nieces and nephews, eight grand-nieces and nephews, his sibling Mary Ann, and predeceased by his brother John and sister Patricia.   There is a glacier named in his honor near Cape Hallett, Antarctica.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The History of Navy Medicine  https://historyofnavymedicine.org
