I am so grateful for my dad’s love and guidance throughout my life. I have so many great memories of my dad, and putting them into words in a few paragraphs feels like an injustice. So many of them involve learning something— always challenging me to learn and do more. Dad made learning interesting and fun (with a few exceptions like when I was brought to tears trying to use a slide rule). He exposed all of us to new experiences and activities- many of which my sister mentioned. Thinking about it now, it’s somewhat of a miracle we still have all our fingers and most of our brain cells as some of the activities would not be considered “safe” by today’s standards. Setting up the electric train set, pouring molten lead into molds to make toy soldiers, soldering lead for stained glass projects, making tea from random roots we pulled up while hiking the Appalachian trail, speeding through cornfields on the old snowmobile, and wiping out more than once on a dirt bike are just a few of the memories that come to mind.
So much of dad’s greatness only became truly evident to me after I left home and was on my own. He was such a great role model for one’s character, integrity, generosity, tenderness, and for having an unselfish love for his family. He was my “rock” when I was dealing with losing Jarryd- Jarryd loved my dad so much and loved spending time with him at the chalet.
Dad didn’t always have the words to express his emotions (like most men of his generation), but there was never a day that I didn’t know how much he loved me and my kids. My dad was such a good man- a wonderful father and grandfather. I’m so grateful to have had him for my dad. I miss him.

As many have said, it is hard to put into word how much dad meant to me. From working on cars. mini-bikes and grandfather clocks, i acquired a knowledge on how to fix (and break!) just about anything mechanical. The life lessons taught (hard work and honesty) can only be gained through observations of one who live them himself, which dad did daily. There are so many memories - the Appalachian Trail houses, the chalet and skiing (ice skiing!) at Blue Knob, the lake house and the boat, all truly enjoyed by his children and grandchildren. I believe we all truly hope and aspire to leave behind a legacy that Dad (and Mom) left with us and our kids.

I knew Ray almost as long as I did my own father, and I always felt he treated me as one of his own. He was a role model in every way that mattered. Kind, generous, devoted to his wife and family, a brilliant professional, and an outdoorsman who was on the slopes of Blue Knob after his 80th birthday.
Ray was the consummate optimist and good sport with any hand life (or Euchre) dealt him. He was also exceptionally modest for someone who was so accomplished. There are some people you meet, and inside of five minutes they’ll let you know they are a doctor or lawyer or something else they are terribly impressed with. Not Ray, the #1 graduate from the Merchant Marine Academy class of ’54. I suspect that particularly in retirement, there were people who had known Ray for years and never knew he was a nuclear engineer, or one of the first engineers on the scene at Three Mile Island. I didn’t even know until he passed way, that he held a paten on the first underwater nuclear propulsion system that made much of the modern U.S. Navy – which he loved dearly – possible. Even in his later years when his short-term memory was not what it had been, there were still flashes of the brilliant engineer. I recall a phone conversation Tracy and I had with him where we had mentioned seeing the HBO program on Chernobyl, and without missing a beat, he proceed to explain in detail what had gone wrong there and the design flaws in the Soviet nuclear reactor.
During the last week of his life, when it was clear his journey was coming to an end, my two emotions were first sadness for the family who was losing their patriarch, but also admiration for Ray. As I shared with friends and colleagues in Culver who expressed their concern and condolences during that time, if ever there was a life well lived it was Ray’s.

Ray was my dad. A few things that come to mind - honestly so many memories - are that he was demanding, he was also loving. He took education and success as seriously as he took recreation and fitness and family. There is not a project he could not tackle - many with duct tape and welding and brut fierce. He was my inspiration and reason I started my career in the US Navy - where I met the love of my life and changed the trajectory for the better. I only wish I’d asked more questions and dig deeper into what was an amazing long and worthwhile life. I take comfort in knowing he is with Jody - the love of his life! RIP and love dad! My true north.

I will always remember Grandpa being the rock and the organizer of the extended family, whether during the summer or Thanksgiving at Lake of the Woods, or acting as family ski instructor and ski patrol at Blue Knob. He always made sure, and allowed, us rambunctious grandkids to be kids and have a great time on the water and the slopes. I especially remember his tireless energy (and patience) putting up with the cousins (particularly Sam and I) as we commandeered, and occasionally sunk, the paddleboat, went on the tube one more time around the lake, or on another long run at Blue Knob. He is the big reason why the cousins, and the family, are as close as they are. Love you, Grandpa.

Grandpa Ray filled our childhood with some of the best memories- he was always up early to inflate every tube and water toy for us on the lake, which as an adult I now realize is no small task. He and Grandma Jody always made sure we had the best time tubing, water skiing, in the hot tub or just playing cards together. I also remember learning how to ski with him at Blue Knob and how lucky we were to share that memory with 3 generations. I feel so fortunate that Grandpa Ray was also a major part of my professional life as a Naval Officer and he came to Newport RI for my ODS graduation as well as promoted me from ENS to LTJG in 2017. It was so special having him there for both major milestones.

Remembering my Uncle Ray, who lived life with dignity, honor and respect.
I have childhood memories of the times in Kennywood Amusement Park wearing my Uncle out on roller coaster rides - my favorite - the only uncle who had the patience to get off, run around , and ride the Racer again and again. We would spend my total day's $2.00 ticket money on the Racer.
Did you know there was a tradition in the Stanley Zogran Sr, home at every holiday time? Grandma grated horseradish on the back porch because it was too strong to grate inside the house. According to Grandpap the proof of a real man, one that had hair on his chest, was the man who could take a full whiff of that horseradish and not choke or spill a tear. I was sitting next to Uncle Ray the holiday he passed the test and was heartily congratulated by his Dad, Len and Stan.
I remember riding on the train cross country with Grandma to visit Uncle Ray and family in California. Wow we had a great summer - I learned to dive in their pool!
Both our sons were born in D.C. and we shared warm, welcome visits and card games with Uncle Ray and Aunt Jody. Both are remembered for their love of life, and for abundantly sharing their joyful spirits.

It takes a life well lived to leave behind a legacy as full and honorable as Grandpa Ray's. He was never a man to mince words, nor hold back a life lesson from us grandkids growing up, but he also knew better than most how to enjoy himself and bring a smile to those around him. Whether it was on the lake or on the slopes, at the card table or on one of his and Grandma's many adventures together, Grandpa Ray shared what he loved with those he loved late into life.
The man that Grandpa Ray was - and will always be in our memory - was one of integrity, faith, and dedication. Those values and more he passed down to his kids and from them to his grandkids, and are the most rare and precious gifts one could receive. Though we'll miss him immensely, Grandpa Ray is leaving behind a family that strives to live up to his name and character. I am grateful now and always to have had such an honorable role model, and the caring, responsible, hard working grandfather that Grandpa Ray was.

Q: What will you never forget about Raymond?
A: I will never forget all the countless holidays we all spent at Grandpa's house in The Lake of The Woods. From 4th of July fireworks over the water on his boat or our own celebration off the pier, to Christmas and all the stockings for every person in our huge family hanging along the railing of his stairs.
I remember waking every Easter to search around their house for a basket of goodies the Easter Bunny left. There was always something unique and special to remember about the Holidays with him and Grandma Jody.
The casual evenings were just as special with Grandpa Ray and Grandma Jody. Most were spent playing Eukre with the family all around their large dining room table with lots of competition.
Finally the memories I am most grateful to them for to this day are those I spent the summers with them at horseback riding camp where I met my one blue eyed-one brown eyed friend, Beanie.
More than the memories, I'll forever remember how wise they both were and how important family was and they never failed to show this in everything they did. To say that I am the luckiest person in the world to have had grandparents like Ray and Jody doesn't even come close to the fortune they both brought to my life and as much as I wish he was here a little longer to meet Joseph's and my first born, I feel very complete knowing I got to share the news with him before the illness. I'm happy he his back with his love, Jody, and I know Jarryd is enjoying his time with Grandpa at last. Thank you for your love and Wisdom Grandpa Ray

How can you express in words 60 years of memories of a person who was always caring, teaching and giving of himself. I will always remember the times we shared playing handball in Canoga Park. I would say it was in and he would say it was out or vice versa depending on who it favored. We always laughed about that thru the years. He always loved good Polish food and was so happy when Angela & I brought him homemade kolbassi from Pittsburgh. We will always love and miss you Uncle Ray.

I remember dinners at Oxen Hill and the good food we had with Uncle Ray and Aunt Josie and my cousins. I remember helping lay down the carpet at the chalet one summer. Uncle Ray took me for a ride on his motorcycle and that was a lot of fun.
