Hello Stephanie, Scott and family,
I met Paul just recently when he contacted me to help him sell his beloved J/122 Orion late last year. It was such a pleasure meeting and then having extensive talks with Paul regarding the sale of the boat, but many other things too! He was so very warm and open and we immediately felt a connection through sailing of course, but also family and friends. He showed great interest in hearing about my youngest son, who had just become a Navy pilot, and I could in turn hear and feel his passion for you and his grandchildren. He was such a good natured and amiable man! I am so saddened to hear of his loss, and I wanted to pass along my condolences to you all and hope that Paul's enormous zest for life, family, business, and sailing will fill your heart with warm memories and inspire you all to also do great things. In my all too brief time with him, he impressed me as a man who did that for many people.

I will never forget the first time I met Paul. September 14, 2012, it was my first day working for Hyperion. I had just moved to Virginia from Massachusetts and was feeling very anxious about the new chapter I was about to begin. My first task was to clean out the piles and piles of papers stacked up in George’s office. I got to work, sorting out the important items and shredding the trash. As I was working through the pile of papers that needed to be shredded, I got a little ambitious and started putting larger and larger stacks of paper into the shredder. And that’s when I found out the hard way that 15 pages was just too much. Of course, I completely jammed the shredder. Thoroughly embarrassed, I went to tell Arleen about what I had done, and then in walked Paul. Huge beaming smile and a larger-than-life energy surrounding him. After hearing what happened, he jokingly looked at me saying, “Seriously?!” And then, in his full suit and tie, he gets down on his hands and knees, slides himself over to the shredder, and starts to pull out huge chunks of half-shredded paper. At the time I hadn’t even been properly introduced to him, so here I am thinking he was just some person that works in the office who was just helping me out. Little did I know, the President and head of the company was down on all fours, fixing my mess, on my first day, without even a second thought. After he cleared the shredder, I was of course teased into oblivion. And he continued to tease me about it for the next 10+ years. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. Paul’s presence in my life was a gift and I will forever be grateful for the years I knew him.

Without Paul, I would never have met my husband! He set us up and 27 years later we are still together. Paul loved to tell everyone that story whenever he was with us. Well, Paul loved to tell many, many stories.
Paul especially loved to fill us in about his children and grandchildren. They were the absolute world to him and brought him such joy.
We were blessed to spend ample time together in the northeast this past year. No matter what he was going through, he always had a positive outlook and was the strongest fighter I’ve ever met.
I am forever grateful that I can call him my friend.

My favorite memories of Cousin Paul all revolve around summer. Paul would arrive with Aunt Clarinda, Uncle Paul and Stephanie to our home in New London, Connecticut. The Long summer days were filled with love and joy and laughter. Whether we went to the beach or hung around the house, it was an unforgettable time. What I recall most about Paul was his great sense of humor, his infectious laugh and how he would dote on me, play games with me, carry me around piggy back, and of course tease me . He was a big brother to me and I loved him and looked up to him with admiration.
On one notable visit, my mother made her signature Spaghetti and Meatball dinner. Paul began singing along with my brothers, “On top of Spaghetti all covered with Cheese there sat my dear meatball , ‘til somebody sneezed. It rolled off the table and onto the floor, my little dog ate it and ran out the door.” Well, that wasn’t the end of the song, because he continued to make up verse after verse that spun into a hilarious tale about the plight of the meatball . We rolled with laughter, until Aunt Clarinda told him to stop. Paul was the ultimate comedian- entertainer indeed. Later that evening he sang “ Ta Ra Ra Boom Dee Ay” and showed his younger cousins how to bump each other across the room; and of course, it became a competition as to who could bump the other the farthest.
Only one memory tops this one was the early summer of 67-68, Paul drove up in his beautiful convertible Mustang; he was beaming with pride as he took my brothers for a ride. I was pea green with envy, because I was too young to go. He promised he take me for Ice cream, but my bed time came before I got my ride. I’m still waiting to ride in that classic Mustang to this day. Perhaps, Paul will greet me at the Pearly Gates with his classic car and take me for a ride with his Kathy, Stephanie, and my God Parents, Clarinda and Paul. Until we meet again sweet Cousin Paul.
Peace and love always. Leslie Cameron Ballew.

While Paul had a passion for his company, family was always first. And that includes the families of his employees. Every time me and Paul would meet and (catch up), he would always bring up the funny story of him giving me a ride to the airport in his Porsche. He forgot how tall I was and said “well Brian, I didn’t think this through!” We both laughed because I couldn’t see out the windshield due to my knees being in the way of my face. Good times. My wife and I thought the world of him and he will be missed dearly. Thoughts and prayers for Scott and Stef.

When my daughters were about 9 years old, Paul and Kathy sailed from Newport to our summer house in Connecticut. The girls spent the afternoon climbing on and jumping off Paul’s “Vento Solare” sailboat, swimming, and even taking the helm at Paul’s direction. Kathy was warm and welcoming as always. It was a beautiful day with my dear Cousin Paul. He was as happy and energetic as the children, bursting with the joy of spending time with family.
Love you and miss you, Paul!
