I am very sad to hear of Bob's passing. He hired me at Booz Allen 23 years ago -- and despite the fact that I had no military background, he trusted that I could be a member of his wargaming and analytics team and he gave me interesting opportunities. I am so thankful for that. What struck me about Bob was that he took his job seriously, but didn't take himself too seriously -- really rare in Washington. I loved his sense of humor and his love for his family, which was always evident. He was a lovely human being. My sincere condolences to the Statz family.

Bob was larger than life. So many lessons I learned from him as a young consultant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. My condolences to the family on such a tremendous loss but I know that he certainly left this world a better place. Thanks, Bob!

It has taken me several days to process this huge loss. My heart aches for the Statz family, extended family and his lifetime of friends and colleagues. He was larger than life and full of stories from all of his various experiences. Those who heard those stories more than once know that each time the details were a little more embellished than the previous time! However, we kept listening to them over and over so we could hear where the embellishment was going to be greater from the last time! We knew where the key parts would lead to that.
It goes without saying that my heart is broken since "Statz" (as many of us called him) was a key part of my life. Many, many years ago, he was my first real boss at Booz Allen. He took a very young, non-military, female, gullible, relatively new hire under his wing and the rest is history. Having lost my father at age 11, Statz served as my 2nd father and taught me so many life lessons that there is not enough room to list them all. His tough love approach to the young “kids” on his team helped to groom us to be able to tackle the intensity and rigor that he and our military clients expected. For me, I learned more than I could ever document on a resume. I admired his calm demeanor during the most stressful times. In comparing the stress of getting a proposal delivered on time or getting to a client meeting or having a successful demo, he would offer that nothing compared to being shot at. Had to love his perspective.
Most of us knew that when Statz came out of his office, he was looking for someone to do something for him. Those who sat closest to his office got the most taskers for sure! Anyone was fair game for a tasker, a joke, poking at, and/or admonishing (when deserved) – or all of them all at once!
My funniest story with Statz is when I gave him a taste of his own medicine! When I was pregnant with my first daughter, Bailey, he would make fun of me each time he saw me and my growing belly. He offered many comments about what I was eating, what I shouldn’t eat, whether or not I was having twins, etc. He knew that I could take it, but one day I turned the tables on him. With a large group of folks out in the hallway, he came by and asked again how many babies I was carrying. Instead of giving him the correct answer – 1, I suggested that I had a better reason for the size of my belly than he did! I went so far as to suggest that HIS was larger than mine and made him line up against the wall with me while others measured who was bigger. At that moment, HE was and we all had a good laugh about it. And that was how you had to handle Statz!
I think of my life in phases – the first phase I was raised by women (my mother and grandmother), the second phase I was raised by men – including Statz – and this current phase, I’m raising my 3 young women (Bailey, Beri, and Bonnie). I know that I’m instilling in them some of those life lessons learned in phase 2 for sure.
Thank you Bob for everything!

I served with Bob in the Army during the height of the Cold War. He had a rare mix of technical excellence, human consideration and compassion -- all while sustaining a balance between family and profession - not an easy task, then or now. Bob was a superb officer, loyal husband and involved father. Everyone enjoyed his easy presence and effective leadership. He carried over these personal skills from the Army to industry -- a thoroughly good man.

I ran into Bob Statz on a gray Sunday at the Great Falls Safeway. It turned out to be one of the best days I ever had. He was my closest friend for forty years and we spent many an hour on that wooden Chris Craft we owned together. Bob was trustworthy, honest, decent, dependable, fiercely devoted to his family, and deeply in love with Serene, the love of his life and his beautiful wife of sixty years. He also spread his protective wings beyond his family to many in need during their darkest hours without even a request. People who met him instantly liked him and never changed that opinion. Friendly and easy-going, his demeanor disguised a strength of character and depth of faith that was unshakeable. Bob was a patriot but the kind that was quiet about it until he was needed, like his two tours in Vietnam. His life story was a series of successes that could fill a book, from convincing that gorgeous model to marry him, rescuing a trapped patrol in Vietnam, raising a huge family, to growing an entire corporate practice. He was a real-life John Wayne, and if you knew him you were glad that men like him were still around. He was a leader whenever and wherever he was present. Always there when needed, ever ready to help others, he will be sorely missed. He was, along with my own father, the finest man I have ever known.

Simply put, Bob was a great guy. He had many attributes- smart, hard working, caring, His accolades are numerous in his military, civilian, and family life. Bob and I worked on some Defense projects together, and he earned a reputation of getting it done. He had a great sense of humor and was a pretty good story teller.
But, when I think of Bob, I remember our conversations. We had offices on the same floor at Booz Allen. And, we both frequently worked late- proposals, reports, etc. He would walk by, hang by my door, and say "what are we both doing here so late"?
Then, we would share some stories of clients, staff, sometimes corporate gossip. Invariably, we'd share a good laugh about something.
I can still see his smile and hear his deep laugh. He is missed.
