Q: How did you meet Joanne?
A: I first met Joanne when I was hired as a substitute counselor at Park View High School. I quickly got to know Joanne as a wise, funny, and compassionate person. Joanne believed in me and advocated for me. I tribute the start of my school counseling career to Joanne as she was instrumental in hiring me full time. Joanne was an excellent leader, looking at situations from an ethical point of view while having the students' best interest at heart. During the school year I was going through a difficult time in my personal life. One day Joanne came into my office because she could tell something was wrong, even though I hadn't said anything about it. She asked me if I wanted to go for a walk outside to get some air and help get my mind off whatever was bothering me. I will always remember that. She was so sweet and intuitive and that act of kindness got me through the work day. I wish I could be there in person to honor you Joanne. I actually have an interview and I know you would tell me to take it! Thank you for your guidance and support. I will miss you dearly.

Walt and family, my sincerest condolences on your loss. Joanne brought her zest for life and great sense of humor to her studies at Virginia Tech as she pursued her master's degree in counseling. I remember her so fondly and was thrilled she became a school counselor. I read her obituary and realized how many ways she gave of herself to others. She lived a full life and truly brought such joy to others. Her dedication to counseling and supervising will continue to live on in her memory.

Q: What will you never forget about Joanne?
A: Joanne and I had a joke that we shared often. Joanne had a way of slipping in a funny when you least expected it. She walked into my office one day as I was dealing with a tough situation. Joanne looked at me very seriously and said with the straightest face, , hey did you forget your comb today? I have one if you need it! After that, we both erupted in laughter and I totally forgot what I was dealing with. Joanne was masterful at delivering a verbal jab with the straightest face and glint in her eye…then she would just keep walking.
Once Joanne and I had to interview a student who was having a tough day. All of a sudden, the student asked if we wanted to meet an alter ego and turned around in his seat. When he turned back around, he had his shirt over his head and began speaking in a different voice and introduced his “other” self to us. I was understandably unaware of what to do or say and without missing a beat, Joanne jumped in and didn’t react in any way. It was one of the most unique situations of my career given the content of the interview. When we finished and the student was sent out, she erupted into laughter from both the content of the conversation and my obvious discomfort with the the alter ego and how to process it and proceed. She teased me for sometime about it.
Joanne was a master counselor and I was able to witness her clinical skills in action more than once. She was a mind ninja for sure…she got in and out before anyone knew she was there!

Mary Ellen, Maureen, Tricia - my eyes fill with tears everytime I think of your sister bond. How inspiring and loving your rapport always has been to me the last 15+ years. May you forever cherish your special sister memories. My heart is with you all.
