For those us that knew her, LB lives on when our wheels touch the trail or our pens touch the paper. I knew her as a climber. I did not know she was afraid of heights. Knowing that she could do so well at something that scared her is what gave me the courage to write this today. And that will live on.

Dear heart, Where did you go? We were JUST about to chat and you just disappeared. All that energy, fun, talent, intellect, and YTD list...now forever altered. Oh, so little time.
What a gift your spark brought to this place...earth.
Thank you for joining me on that wild research journey, where you were nothing short of stoic; steadfast, determined, and loving ALL THE WAY. Between freaking out, we laughed like crazy.
Our George sends his love your way, and thanks you for all of the puppy coaching tips. Tell Oslo (and your dad), we're here for him if he needs us in Ohio (we have a big backyard).
As per usual, you're leading the way my friend. Blessings on your path Lauren.
Lv you,

Memories of this freckled face smiling, energetic, bright young lady are many to share. I will be forever grateful for every Monday afternoon and many activities of service, fund raising, exploration and Fun with troop 1321. As I look thru 1321 photos..I shed many tears remembering….Sharing arts and crafts and new skills… planting tulips in town, food pantry time, and decorating children’s wing at Fairfax Hospital…camping, fishing, biking, skiing and many many beach trips… Girl Scout cookies, phone book deliveries and of course snow cones. May all those Christmas Angel crafts be on the pathway of your journey to eternal rest. I will forever cherish the memories. My life has been blessed with the joy that Lauren shared. Forever in my heart, Ms Sue

I met Lauren through the Armstrong Institute. We enjoyed discussing beta on climbing routes, funny stories from outdoor adventures, and photos of our pets. She graciously shared her time, knowledge, and passion with me whenever I asked for guidance and acted as a role model in our field. She brought levity to the most mundane tasks of the day, particularly the writing accountability groups. She had a quick wit and a sincere laugh. To all who knew her and especially those who loved her, I'm so very sorry for you loss and I hope that in this time of grief, memories of her bring you warmth.

Lauren and I spent our minutes and dimes together, trying to earn more of each to do the things that matter most. We swapped our thoughts, ideas, and sentences in hopes that the NIH or some other grantor would grant us our wishes--to pursue questions that would offer some answers on how to make the world a better place for ourselves and others. Her mid-sentence chuckles and smiles were sometimes unexpected. They offered a soft landing to the heaviness of our work in hopes of creating psychological safety and kinder workplaces for every individual. She channeled her vulnerability and self-proclaimed awkwardness into making us all braver to do the same. She challenged us to be seen and show up as ourselves. I will cling tightly to the lessons she provided as I and we figure out how to carry on. And carry on, we will because she showed us how to live out loud and with authenticity.
There are times when we are faced with more question marks than answers. Some periods leave us with exclamation points and expletives--but no explanations. The why's and how's dominate our thoughts, and we fill in all of the "becauses "with theories. Today I'm cycling through all of them as I remember Lauren.
When the ? 's stoke the grief and reduce our hopes to droplets of doubt, I will call upon Lauren's chuckle and remember to find moments of joy, to live our values, and to seek out the friends and green spaces that would invite our imaginations to bloom.
I'm grateful for the moments we had and all that we were able to create. In the words of one of her favorite bands, Blink 182, "I miss you."

To the Benisheks,
I first met Lauren almost 15 years ago in graduate school. She was just starting her doctorate as I was finishing mine. Since then I've had the good fortune to work with Lauren at Hopkins for almost 10 years. Through all of those years, so much about Lauren stayed the same. You could always rely on her for encouragement, a laugh, a fresh idea and different way to look at things. So much changed too though. She matured and grew into a professional with a strong voice and big impact. She made a difference to those of us who worked with her directly and to broader research community. She will be missed greatly by many personally and professionally. I will miss and remember her. We'll learn from the many positive examples she set for us.

I wanted to share a small sample of the feedback from our Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality Leadership Academy scholars on Lauren's talk on Design Thinking. They reflect how her teaching really touched those who had the great opportunity to learn from her. We will all miss working with and learning from Lauren, although her spirit and approach to quality and safety will live on through all of us.
"I really loved this talk - I love all of the talks, but this was very helpful in being able to apply to my project right away while the information was still fresh."
"This class really helped to focus our projects."
"Engaged speaker and very entertaining!"
"I appreciated the hands on application of concepts learned. Thank you so much!"

I got to know Lauren through the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality Leadership Academy. She was a key speaker in the curriculum for the past 4 years and gave a fantastic talk on Design Thinking. She was engaging and personable. She led numerous scholars through the design thinking process - empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test - a process that she also applied in her approach to life. She was ready with a good story to describe important concepts, including stories about her life as an avid rock climber. I will always remember Lauren for her willingness to help and collaborate with others, her openness to learning, improving, and communicating, and her positive spirit.

Lauren was a huge part of my grad school experience. We shared countless instant messages, conferences, happy hours and other outings, all the while commiserating and supporting one another. We graduated at the same time, so we even got to share our special day. Following graduation, we remained friends, keeping in touch through visits/conferences, texting, and virtual happy hours (we coined them ‘digidates’), which we did regularly with our friend Amanda, long before they became popular during the pandemic! We would catch up on each other’s lives - chatting about our careers, relationships, pets, hobbies, etc. Every time we connected, I could count on there being lots of laughs and lots of support.
Lauren became someone I truly admired. She cultivated an adventurous life for herself - acquiring a whole new set of skills in climbing, hiking, etc., traveling regularly, and building a strong friendship circle. I loved seeing what she was up to. She was also having success taking her career in new, highly impactful directions. Above all, she brought her kind and considerate nature to everything she did.
I will always remember Lauren as vibrant, smart, funny, independent, adventurous, caring, and my friend. I will miss her deeply. My most heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and colleagues. Love you, Lauren ❤

Lauren was always willing to engage on any topic and dig in to the meat of an issue. I admired her willingness to participate and her genuine enjoyment of discourse. I am deeply saddened to hear about the sudden loss of Lauren. I had the pleasure of working with Lauren on the Safety Program in Perinatal Care, a joint effort between JHU and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. I was so pleased to work with Lauren, and greatly enjoyed her sense of humor and approach to the work. Lauren was a bright light on our team. She had a strong sense of grace and an amazing way of relaying challenging information in a practical way. She was always so gracious, kind, and supportive. I often found myself thinking of ways that I could work with Lauren in the future, or tap into her many talents and strengths. I am so sorry for this loss, and will often think fondly of Lauren's vibrant memory and strong commitment to her work.

On March 11, 2023 I lost a friend I cared for deeply, Lauren Benishek. I will miss her as a adventurer partner and friend. I will miss her independent spirit. I will miss her conversation on long drives to climbing destinations. We talked often about future destinations to explore and long term plans.
Lauren could walk in a crowded room and within 10 min make strangers feel like friends.
I only knew her for a short while but thought there was plenty of time for new adventures. Some things you could have never guessed.
As she would say, “life is short, do rad shit.” She would face her fear of heights head on. She was targeting doing solo backpacking.
I love you and will miss you immensely Lauren.

Lauren and I met a few years ago when I was in grad school and she was working at AI. My supervisor Connie had been working with Lauren for some years before that.
To me, Lauren felt like a mentor in the research field. I looked up to her, for her many great papers, bright research ideas, and the way she balanced her work and private life. She was devoted to her work and would help others where she could. The way she could tell a story always brightened any work meeting we had. Last December, I flew out to Baltimore for a work visit and she welcomed me like a friend, driving me to AI/Hopkins every day, being concerned for my safety. We learned of our shared love for taco's and collecting christmas ornaments. I loved her authenticity.
We will cherish her uplifting personality and the work we got to do together in the past years. She'll be missed by many, that is for sure.
Our hearts go out to Lauren's parents, sister, many friends, and her beloved dog Oslo.

I am truly saddened by this loss. I want to share a story that I feel like personifies Lauren to the fullest, that I hope makes her family and loved ones laugh. I'm sorry it's so long. I first met Lauren sometime in the 2010s during grad school. We ended up in the same lab and sat in cubes across from one another for several years. We collaborated closely on many projects, with lots of ups and downs. But I have to say that one of the top 5 times I've laughed the hardest in my life, to this day, is because of an inside joke Lauren and I shared. Somehow, we randomly one day stumbled upon the Mick Jagger & David Bowie "Dancing in the Street" music video on YouTube. (If you have never seen it, you should absolutely watch it). She and I cried laughing at the insanity of this video, over and over again, and it became a running joke for months on end. One day, I printed out a close-up of one of the guys in one of our favorite moments of the video - where he is doing this insane jump thing with a horrendous outfit and hilarious facial expression. I left it on her desk for her to find. I think he made his way back and forth between our desks occasionally. We laughed, and eventually I forgot about this. Until YEARS later. Yes, years. At this point, Lauren was at Hopkins and I was doing a post-doc in Houston. For context, because this makes it even funnier, it had probably been at least several months since Lauren and I had even touched base with one another. I checked my work mailbox as I did any other day, and I found an envelope with a weird return address (pictured). I immediately opened it up to find the screenshot from the video I had printed for her and put on her desk 4 or 5 years earlier, with this note and only this note (see picture). When I tell you I instantly cried laughing.... people in the office were asking me what was so funny and I truly could not even begin to explain. It gets even funnier when you think about the logistics: This lived on her desk for years at UCF. When she left UCF, she packed it AND TOOK IT TO BALTIMORE. She opened up her stuff in Baltimore, must of found it, and still decided it wasn't garbage. She kept it for YEARS, sneakily found my new work mailing address somehow (email signature? online? I honestly still don't know), and cold-sent it. I could laugh and laugh at this entire situation for the rest of my life, and I will, thanks to Lauren. This is the epitome of Lauren and I am so sad for this loss.

A: I will never forget how impressive Lauren was. I have known her since attending Clearview Elementary School, and she was the type of person who always, always did the right thing. I love to hear her personality streaming through so clearly. I know Lauren through AI; she had an office right behind my cubical/desk. She was so welcoming and warm- “feel free to pump in my office anytime it is open”, “want to eat lunch together?”, etc. We worked on some SPPCII projects. She was brilliant and highly educated, but made you feel so comfortable around her.
Lauren was one who would talk to you anytime/anywhere. She had fun climbing stories, hiking tales, and memories of her dog. She was definitely a unique person who would engage with anyone. I’m devastated to hear of this loss but hope to remember all she taught us.

In 2014, I had the pleasure of meeting Lauren shortly after she moved to Maryland from Florida to begin working at the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute. Her enthusiasm for recently completing her PhD was palpable, and her zest for life extended to a love for animals, rock climbing, cycling, and exploring the local city scene. Our friendship quickly blossomed, and during those early years, we spent countless hours sharing meals while engaging in heartfelt conversations. These pictures hold cherished memories from 2014-2018. My deepest sympathies go out in mourning Lauren, she will be missed.

What a devastating loss for family, friends, coworkers, and the quality and patient safety community at Johns Hopkins and beyond. I met Lauren while at the Armstrong Institute and was drawn by her infectious positive attitude and energy. We had great conversations at the end of our “WAGs” (writing accountability group) about house hunting, dogs, hiking, running, and National Parks we planned to visit. I retired last year, and we had plans to get together for day hikes when schedules allowed. Sadly, this will not happen. There is no person who will ever replace Lauren. Each day I walk my dog, hike a trail in the woods, or visit a park I will remember Lauren.

We had a tribute zoom call this am with some of her colleagues - likely 30-40 people on the call- and it is very clear that she is very loved and appreciated in our community and she will be missed.

Lauren and I shared many fun times, deep conversations, and doggy dates sharing our lives as next door neighbors of five years at Tindeco Wharf in Baltimore. She was an incredibly intelligent woman with a kind heart and bright smile, and I send my deepest condolences to those mourning the loss of such a beautiful soul - especially her family.

The love and joy Lauren brought to AI and our working friendship was a gift. We enjoyed some fun chats in the ladies room after Lauren rode her bike to work and sitting next to one another at many after work functions. Lauren charms of which they are so many will be sorely missed. RIP

Q: What will you miss most about Lauren?
A: Lauren was my first friend at Hopkins. We joined the faculty around the same time and she always created such a "safe space" to share good things and frustrating things, worries, and hopes. I will miss her as a friend who always brought a smile to my face. And I will miss her as a colleague, who added so much to everything she touched. Mostly, I will just miss her as a person and all of the brightness she brought into the world. I think of Lauren as someone giving 110% of herself - someone who cared deeply, felt deeply, and thought deeply.
My deepest condolences to her family and her many friends.

For my first few years at AI, my desk was right in front of Lauren's office. We chatted quite a bit about different stuff, life to politics. I also had the pleasure of working with her on a few impactful projects where her brilliance really shined and I was fortunate to learn a ton from her. She will be missed by many. Sincere condolences to her family, friends, and everyone around her who felt her warmth and appreciated her smile.

Though I worked with Lauren for a number of years, I got to know her better through a work trip. Our team went to Oklahoma and Texas just before COVID. It was an exciting trip, filled with much drama (including interesting car happenings!)
Though our group started out as colleagues, we ended the trip as friends. I think this says something special about Lauren--she was quick to share friendship.
When my son was sick last year, I was deeply moved by Lauren's sincere expression of concern and warmth for me and my family. I am so appreciative of her kindness.
Thank you, Lauren, for sharing a little space and time here, in this place.
You are missed.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Lauren?
A: One of my favorite qualities of Lauren was her ability to smile and light up a room. We traveled together to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia years ago. She always presented a good nature, a great sense of humor, and a dedication to her work. She was a TeamSTEPPS expert (the purpose for our work trip to Saudi) and always a widely respected member of the team.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lauren in person for the first time at the 2022 Armstrong Institute holiday party. Her personality and smile lit up the room and she was an absolute force on the dance floor. Although I did not know her well, I am certain her magnetism was felt by all who met her.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.

Enjoyed the time she spent rock climbing with me. I met LB in 2015, she joined our meetup climbing group. She was a fast learner for sure. She out climbed most of the people in our group. I enjoyed her company on excursions both at the gym and to whatever destination we went to. Lauren would bring her dog Oslo with her on most outdoor adventures. She was always telling us don’t approach Oslo, when he ready to meet you he will come over. Her dog was so protective of her. She will be missed. Rest in Peace
