It’s amazing what memories stay with you forever. I don’t even remember where it was we went, but one afternoon when I was 5 or 6 uncle Ken took Emily and I to some sort of indoor play area for kids. I must have had fun, because to this day I remember running around with Emily and uncle Ken. I’m very thankful for that memory as it is a reminder of the type of person Ken is and how he makes you feel when you spend time with him.

My favorite memory of Uncle Ken was when we took our trip to D.C when I was around 18 or so. He drove us into DC, did the "monument walk" with us, and regaled us with history the entire time (as well as Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons in the van to and from the sights!). He knew so much about so many subjects and always had an interesting fact or tidbit to share about what w were doing, seeing, or eating. I loved spending time with him!

Since Tim did such a superb job of writing about the Skibos and rafting expeditions, I am going to add a few memories from my youth.
My first thought is the summer when I turned 6 and we visited Gerri and Ken at College Park. Their complex had a pool and that was the summer Ken taught me how to swim. He must have had a premonition that water would be in our future so I had better get used to it!
Later on that trip, we visited a book store. I found a Boy's Life book on Football that I was interested in. Ken took the book and opened it to a random page and issued a challenge that if I could read that page out loud and explain it to him, he would buy the book for me. Needless to say, I ended up leaving the store with a big smile with the first book in that Boy's Life series that would be a treasured part of my childhood book collection (Tim - we won't talk about what happened to my other treasure being SI magazines).
The third memory was when I was about 12 and visited Long Island. This trip was highlighted by a trip to the completed World's Fair exhibits along with a memory of being allowed to wander the streets of Long Island by myself to buy baseball cards and somehow meet up with some neighborhood kids to play baseball. Things took a turn when the kids decided to throw M80s at some older woman walking by. Needless to say, Elizabeth never heard about that particular adventure.
The last part of the trip was to a Mets/Pirates baseball game at Shea Stadium, that happened to the day that they were filming a scene for the Odd Couple Movie before the game. In this scene, Oscar misses the Mets pulling off a game winning triple play due to a call from Felix. Originally, Roberto Clemente was supposed to hit into the triple play, but he decided that his fans in Puerto Rico watching the movie, wouldn't understand that it was for show so he backed out and Bill Mazeroski (Aunt Judith's favorite player growing up) filled in. We were instructed to cheer when it happened for the movie background, but as a loyal Bucco fan, I had no choice but to boo.
Lots more memories and good times - Rest in Peace Admiral!

K-E-N was a great man. He was a large part of my life as the father of my best friend. He observed us striving to become men in that awkward time of young adulthood mostly during summers between college. K-E-N was a wholesome role model, and fun to be around. He was a great mentor and an industrious tinkerer. We loved joining up with him on odd weekends to pitch in building “the roundhouse.” K-E-N was the head builder, foreman and laborer all wrapped together! For breaks we’d head to the river and go rafting. Once we even went to play paintball, where K-E-N was our gallant field marshal, guarding our flag! Such fond early memories of growing up and spending time with K-E-N!
As we grew older and moved on with our own careers and families, it was always a rare treat to reconnect at a Willmot gathering in PA or VA.
K-E-N was engaging and still wanted to see how OUR lives were going. Not really realizing that he had such a hand in shaping our earlier years. In recent years, I regret I hadn’t seen K-E-N after we moved out west. But with Tim, he was always a topic of our thoughts and conversations. I hold such reverence and respect for a man so upright and intelligent. A great Dad, and by extension, a great Dad of my best friend. He will be missed dearly. On behalf of Jamie and I, please accept our deepest condolences.
