Obituary of Wayne B. Trautner

Please share a memory of Wayne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Wayne B. Trautner, 59, of Sterling, Va, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2023 at Reston Hospital.

He was born on November 22, 1963 at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va. On the day our beloved President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Wayne’s parents, Rudy and Dolores, welcomed their third son to the family. Shortly after his arrival, the family moved to Sterling Park, Va, where Wayne spent most of the rest of his life.

It was here where he met his soulmate, Lori, would eventually become his wife for nearly 39 years.  After graduating from Park View High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, following his father and both older brothers, as a jet engine mechanic. Wayne and Lori were first stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va where they welcomed their first born, a daughter. Wayne cross trained into photo interpretation, and after retraining at Laughlin AFB near Del Rio, Texas, was transferred to Germany.  In Germany they added to their family with the birth of their son.  After their tour in Germany, they rotated back to Langley AFB where, after about 10 years service, Wayne opted to take the ‘early out’ and hung up his uniform.

Wayne worked in Northern Virginia supporting various companies as a UNIX admin as well as a pre/post sales consultant. After the IT bubble burst, Wayne reached out to his former commander who helped him find a position supporting the Defense Intelligence Agency.  Here, he found a home working for Cherokee Nation.

Wayne was a devout local sports fan, supporting the Redskins, Nationals, and especially the Capitals. If you asked Wayne to talk about music, prepare yourself for a dissertation on how the Canadian Rock group, Rush, is not only the best three piece band, but the best rock group of all time. Going deep sea fishing with his son can easily be called his happy place on this earth. If Wayne could be on the Rebel, heading out to the jet stream, while watching the Caps beat the Penguins all the while blasting his favorite Rush album, that, for him, would truly be heaven on earth!

But Wayne’s greatest love was his family. His children, his grandchildren, his pets, but especially his wife, Lori.  From the day they met to his last breath, they existed for each other. They created an amazing life together, forging so many memories with so many friends. His legacy, his children and grandchildren, are a testament to his life.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents Rudolph C and Dolores E. Trautner, and his older brother Glen R. Trautner. He is survived by his wife Laura A. Trautner (nee Braig), his daughter Patricia, and his son Karl V. Trautner (Kiersten), his older brother Jeffrey W. Trautner (Lanett) and 5 grandchildren.
