All the neighborhood has been asking me "When is Burt's funeral?".You would have the whole neighborhood attend. Burt touched many hearts, especially mine. All I know is that he tried every day to be the best he had. One day I told him about my son's operation. Two or three weeks later he asked how my son was doing. I was in awe that he remembered.
This was the first year we did not winter in Florida. It was such good weather I walked almost every day and so did Burt. Many times I walked past Burt's home and waved. He was usually sitting by the light fixture in his living room. On my way back there would be Burt.
Sometimes when I was in my car and Burt was walking, I would stop and walk with Burt. I would ask him how he was. He might say "Not so good". I would say "Join the club".
We often sat in the chairs in front of his home and discussed politics, flowers, etc.
I loved seeing Laura on her walks with Burt. He always had clean shirts when she visited. I applauded your family's decision to let him live in his home. He loved his home and he loved his independence.
I never pass his home without waving. Even now, although I KNOW HE IS NOT THERE. When he left by ambulance, we guessed he might not be coming back. He had lived the way he wanted to live .
Burt loved his family and talked about you a lot. Thank you for letting us share the last part of his life.
PS He loved talking to my husband about Cornell and the surrounding area where he grew up.
