Robert Steven Wanko

Born October 29, 1944 to Paul and Irene Wanko in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Robert (Steve) served his country in the Vietnam War, stationed in Fort Detrick, MD, in Vietnam as a criminal investigator with the Sixth MP group, PSFC, Sixth US Army, and Presidio in CA. After his military service he finished his education at BYU and earned his degree in law enforcement. He was hired by the United States Secret Service, starting his career in New York City. He was transferred to Washington DC and was on the Presidential detail of President Carter and President Reagan. He also served on Jim Baker, Treasury Secretary, detail. He was then transferred to Charleston, WV as Special Agent in Charge of the office. He finished his career of 21 years in the Washington DC field office.

Robert took a job at The Greenbriar Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. as head of security. He retired from The Greenbriar after 10 years. Robert and his wife became snow birds, spending the winters in Dunedin, FL.

After a 5-year fight with prostate cancer he died peacefully at home on July 11, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia Wanko. His daughter, Suzanne Beardslee and spouse David Beardslee, his son, Paul Wanko and spouse Shannon Wanko, and 4 grandchildren Kyrstin Mitchell and spouse Darius Mitchell, J.P. Murphy, Avelyn Wanko and Eleanor Wanko.

There will be a memorial of his life at Adams, Green Funeral home in Herndon VA on July 21, 2023 from 5-8 pm.
