I am very saddened by the news of John's passing. John was my supervisor early on in my federal career at the U.S. Department of Education. I greatly respect him, his kindness, mentorship care he had for his staff - his dedication ranked so high, he was always dedicated to the mission of the department and the federal government overall. I mourn his loss and send my regards to his wife and children who he spoke of at work - he absolutely adored his family. May you all continue to be strong for each other. He was a very kind man and a great leader for us to follow. I am forever thankful our paths crossed.

I was so sad to learn of John’s death. We worked together at ED for many years. A fond memory I have of John is our trip to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We prepared for Secretary Spellings visit but in the off hours checked out the bars in the French Quarter. He had a good, dry sense of humor and always talked about his family who clearly meant so much to him. Sending you all my deep felt condolences - may his memory be a blessing.

Sending my condolences to John's family and friends and hoping beautiful memories will bring them comfort as they mend and mourn. I was honored to have worked with John during my tenure on the NACAC Board of Directors and always appreciated his professionalism, warmth, wit, and kindness. He inspired all of us and made a lasting impact on NACAC.

I had the good fortune to work with John at the Department of Education before his federal retirement, but I also had crossed paths with him when he was at NEH and I was at the Arts Endowment. John was a constant source of advice and strategy when I wanted to move a policy or public communications idea up the chain of decision making. His knowledge of public policy was deep and his integrity, both inside and outside of the department, was unquestionable. My condolences to John's family on the loss of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather but also to many in federal government who benefitted from his service. Doug Herbert
