I had the good fortune to work with John at the Department of Education before his federal retirement, but I also had crossed paths with him when he was at NEH and I was at the Arts Endowment. John was a constant source of advice and strategy when I wanted to move a policy or public communications idea up the chain of decision making. His knowledge of public policy was deep and his integrity, both inside and outside of the department, was unquestionable. My condolences to John's family on the loss of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather but also to many in federal government who benefitted from his service. Doug Herbert
