I'm sad that I will never see you again here on this earth. I will forever miss your wisdom, encouragement and friendship. You were probably the hardest working man that I ever knew and I am happy that you are now getting a much needed rest. I promise our grandchildren will know you through stories and pictures. You were so proud of all your children and grandchildren. Until we meet again......

Received an email today about the closing of Vienna Hardwoods due to the passing of John. I remember John as being such a kind and helpful man the times I was at his shop buying wood. After reading his obit- WOW- what an amazing life he led !!
Who knew ??
He will surely be missed by all the woodworkers in the area.

Jack was my baby brother. He and his twin sister Jill were born when I was just shy of 3 years old and very “into” nursery rhymes. So I wanted them to be named Jack and Jill. That later turned out to be a problem for Jill when elementary school classmates teased them about their names. So she picked up a small chair and hit him over the head. After that they were put in separate classrooms. Jack was interested in improving his reading skills so I worked with him on that, using a book he liked — Freddy the Pig. I recently bought the anniversary collection of the early Freddy books that we read together and it brings back good memories. Jack and I also teamed up to deliver newspapers on our neighborhood route. At that time girls were not hired for neighborhood routes and Jack was below the minimum age. So the newspaper let us team up to be able to have the route. Lots of good memories.

I met Jack in 1964 when we were first year men at UVA living in Humphrey Dorm. Unlike most of our friends, he was a brilliant student and made outstanding grades despite the chaos around him.
Later we shared an apartment together with several other students. He was a great guy with many friends and was always fun company. He led us on many terrific adventures, such as caving in West Virginia, the Montreal World’s Fair, the New Orleans French Quarter, Florida beaches, and the most adventurous of all, Mexico City and Acapulco.
We remained close after UVA and got together with our mutual friends at UVA football games, weddings, parties and other family events. Betsy and I have many fond memories of good times we had with Jack and his family. We hold these memories close as we mourn his passing.
