Hannibal was the whole reason why I came to the Fish & Wildlife Service. He was great friend, mentor and political operative. He understood what we were trying to do, and he did everything to support it. The Service was lucky to have a true leader in conservation and someone who knew how navigate the politics of fisheries. For all those wannabe leaders (you know who you are), Hannibal tread lightly and always had service, leadership and friendship in his wake. I count myself lucky to be his friend -- Joe Starinchak

I attended Arkansas A. M. & N. College with Hannibal Bolten in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He was an exceptional person then and I'm sure he did not stray from being himself. My condolences to his family and I am certainly sending up prayers for you. Keep the faith. You are still loved by your A. M. & N. Family (UAPB).

Hannibal had a huge heart and was the first down-to-earth Big Boss I'd ever met when I joined the USFWS in 2009. Within a couple months on the job and very few interactions (about recent fishing pursuits), he invited me to join his annual Lake Erie walleye fishing trip. Being about as low a pay-grade employee as you can be, I was intimidated for a second but Hannibal always went out of his way to make every single person in every room feel like they belonged. I went back the next 2 summers and made some friends along the way, but the best memory was using Hannibal's incredible pork chops as bait and catching a legal walleye on a strip of fat. The man could fish, fill a room with laughter, and tell great stories, but he was also one helluva CHEF!

Hannibal was a dear man and a dear friend; a great conservationist; and a man dedicated to making the FWS a great and representative organization. I can’t believe he’s gone to scout ahead for us. I will miss him, and hope that I have lived an honorable enough life so that I might meet him again. Via con Dios my friend! Larry Riley

What an incredible man Hannibal was. I can still see and hear him laughing and smiling. He was always happy and put a smile on my face. I know my dad treasured his friendship dearly. He will be greatly missed but I find comfort in knowing he is home with Jesus Christ! -Gretchen Hengel, (Nick Hengel’s daughter).

My condolences to the family, colleagues, classmates, and friends of Hannibal Bolton, one of my longest and dearest friends. Hannibal and I first met when he was 6 years old and I was 8 or 9. We attended the same elementary, high school, and college, and we even had the same major--Agronomy. A consummate professional, Hannibal never met a stranger and he mentored and sponsored hundreds of young aspiring leaders. I especially thank his loving and loyal spouse, Verlee, for how she took care of my friend. Hannibal never lost sight of who he was or whose he was!

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Bolton Family on the passing of Hannibal. Hannibal and I joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Region 3 around the same time in the early 1970's. I replaced Hannibal at Central States Fishery Station Princeton, IN in 1976. Our careers paralleled and intersected continuously over the years. We saw each other frequently at Regional and National meetings sharing stories and looking forward to the future. I retired earlier than him and did not get to see him during his last years with the Agency. I miss him and feel the void he has left. I am lucky to have called him friend. Chuck Surprenant, Palm Bay, FL.
