Obituary of Kathleen Gannon

Please share a memory of Kathleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Kathleen Sharon Ann (Kirkpatrick) Gannon earned her Heavenly wings peacefully at home this past Monday, October 2nd 2023 transitioning at the milestone age of 80.  She was fondly called “Mrs G” or “Mom” by many that knew her.  Kathi’s four grandchildren called her Granny.  She is survived by two sons Robert “Bobby” (Noreen) and Kevin (Trivi), four grandchildren: Cailtin (Brinton), Jonathan, Kyle, and Charlie (Max).  Further Kathleen has three brothers: Kevin (Pat), Brian (Chris), and Shaun (Patti). Family is scattered up and down the East Coast from NY to VA.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Robert John Gannon (Bob) who died in 1997.

Kathi was born and raised in Claymont, DE.  Graduated HS and worked in the Wilmington area throughout the early 60s.  She married Bob in April 1966 and settled into a house in what was to be called Sterling Park, VA where she raised a family and lived in the family home for 57 years until her death.  In those 57 years, she had many stories, adventures, life events, and memories.  She worked a variety of jobs throughout the 70s and 80s as an administrative executive, bookkeeper, and support staff.  In the 80s, she got work with the federal government and turned that into world travel, and a life adventure with her husband when they lived in Dublin, Ireland for two years.

Kathi was active in many early Sterling Park organizations, political campaigns, and Church groups.  She was a founding member of the of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, attending mass in the basement of the rectory thru the days of the new buildings off Route 7. She was active in the local Knights of Columbus Council and enjoyed many memories of “The Barn”.   She, like many “old school Sterling folks”, was instrumental in forming foundations of a new community throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s. During those times, she made many friendships, supported her family’s many activities, and just became “Mrs. G”.

Kathi’s passion was family.  But in her spare time, she loved travel and family genealogy.  Some of her fondest memories are trips to Ireland and Scotland to research family lineage.  She traveled to New Dehli, India and got to experience a totally different part of the world.  She led a full and glorious life.  After fighting a long health battle over the last few months, she left us at the age of 80. Always sharp, she had a quick wit (and temper), but did so lovingly.  She will be remembered by all who met and knew her.

Plans are being made for a burial in Wilmington, Delaware and a Celebration of Life to be held in Virginia. Those dates are TBD at this time.
