Obituary of Howard M. Hines
Howard M Hines died on October 10, 2023, one day short of his 92nd birthday, while being briefly treated for chronic conditions at the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health South Hospital in Stuart, Florida.
Howard was born on October 11, 1931, in Chicago, and grew up in Louisville, KY and Miami Beach, FL. He was a graduate of St Leo Preparatory School, Xavier University, and Syracuse University, and studied at George Washington and Howard Universities. A dedicated educator, Howard began his teaching career at Bullis Prep school in MD, taught in Arlington County Schools, VA, and Prince Georges County Schools, MD, and retired from both Fairfax County Schools, VA, and Montgomery County Schools, MD. He also taught many graduate level courses for the University of Virginia, George Washington University, and Lynchburg College, VA. His teaching career spanned an impressive 47 years. Howard was also active in the International Reading Association, and served as president of the Fairfax County Reading Teachers’ Association, and the Virginia State Reading Teachers’ Association.
Howard served three years in the US Army, during the Korean War, while stationed in Fontainebleau, France. During those years, he learned to love France and, especially, Paris. For many subsequent years, he indulged his love for travel, with trips that included his wife, sons, daughter in law, and grandchildren, introducing them to Europe at their young ages of three and four.
Howard is survived by, and was devoted to, his wife, Bonnie, his sons Christopher and Gregory, daughter in law, Kelley, and dearly beloved grandchildren, Aiden and Olivia.
Visitation will be at the Adams Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St., Herndon, VA, on Wednesday, October 18, 5PM-8PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October19, at 12:30 PM, at St Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church, 1020 Springvale Rd, Great Falls, VA 22066, followed by internment at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon, VA A Celebration of Life will follow at Crown Plaza Hotel, 2200 Centreville Rd., Herndon, 20170.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Sisters of the Poor, Washington DC and St. Jude's Hospital for the Children.
