Frank as I called him, was my best friend, business partner, and coworker for many years. While we ran Mercury out in CA as business partners, at an Easter Sunday meal, he taught our son(mine & Sylvia) Travis to love to eat butter - at 43 he still does. He was a great dancer, he would always try to get me to go with him, but I would only watch, I have 2 left feet. I have many, many wonderful memories of the time I was blessed to have spent time with him.
My deepest condolences to his wonderful family and his countless friends. The world is a sadder place with Smokey's passing passing.
With all my love Dwight L russi

My heartfelt condolences to Smokey's family. The absence of a heretofore constant in their lives is always the most difficult for family members.
I first met Smokey about 35-36 years ago. I don't recall the location of AOC's first office but I do recall meeting Jim McCarthy, Dick Shields and several others before AOC moved offices and eventually got out to Thunderbolt.
Smokey was a clever, skilled and prescient businessman. In other words, Smokey knew what he was talking about when he called me to discuss whatever. In fact, Smokey also knew when he didn't know what he was talking about - but listened to those that did. (Not surprising because Smokey populated his companies with talented technical and management personnel.)
Like others who worked with Smokey I was subjected to his "somewhat" unrealistic deadlines. (Usually not more than once a month...) But when the work was done (even when completed within a realistic time frame) I always seemed to get a thank you note.
I was always happy to win a case for AOC or provide some particular advice that helped with an AOC corporate deal or issue. But I was happiest when I got Smokey the Redskin helmet for his desk. He loved it and that's all I needed to know.
Like all who knew him I'll miss Smokey. When I think of him in the coming years I'll be sad but I'll also smile because I was fortunate to have worked with and laughed with such a great man.

Smokey was a terrific classmate and the best fast softball pitcher in our class at the Naval Academy. Always ready to help a classmate.
