Obituary of Barry Lewis Kline

Please share a memory of Barry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On October 18th, my father, Barry Louis Kline, Sr., earned his angel wings. He had been dealing with lung and breathing issues for over a year. In the past few months his health gradually began to decline.

Dad was the third of six children born to Raymond Leo Kline and Mildred Irene DeHaven. In order they are Raymond “Leo” Jr. (deceased 2016), Ronny, Barry, Carol Ann, Kenny, and Glenn. He was born in Winchester, Virginia. He graduated from James Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Connecticut in 1968.

Dad enlisted in the Navy, served on the USS Barney in the early 1970s, and did a tour in the Mediterranean. A few times he found himself at the helm of a troop transport full of Marines during their training. He joked about “accidentally” maneuvering through rough waters to see how many would lose their lunch. Of course, then it was their duty to clean the transport upon return!

He met my mother Joanne Hosaflook at a dance for Job’s Daughters; Joanne, and Sandy Anderson (Purvis - Barry's cousin) were members. Anyone who met my father knows he had a love of joking around and telling stories, often to just get someone riled up. Especially if that person was my mother. He liked to say that his cousin Sandy asked him to dance with “that lonely little girl.” Then mom would protest, and he would laugh knowing he got her going! They were married on 12 December 1970, 53 years this year. They raised three sons: me, Bryan, and Daniel.

While he loved his whole family, he cherished the time he spent with his granddaughters: Ella, Tatem, and Addison. Going to soccer games, swim meets, and every activity he could. He loved seeing photos and videos of them, and especially Facetime chats when they were getting ready for bed at night. They were everything to him.

He worked hard in the construction/home remodeling industry. He also spent several years selling Tupperware when my mother took a break after Daniel was born. He used to wear a button to parties that said “Your Tupperware Lady is a Man.”

He loved working on the house and on his yard. He was always drawing sketches of project ideas on notepads or napkins. Some were successful, some not so much. But he enjoyed the process and kept himself busy.

Everyone who met my dad has stories about him. He had an impact on everyone he met. It was not uncommon for people to feel like he was their second father. He always tried to help if he could. This endeared him to many people, who will never forget him.

We will be having a viewing at Adams-Green Funeral Home at 721 Elden St, Herndon, Virginia on Tuesday, October 24th from 4 to 7pm.

Beginning at 5:30 pm that night we will also be welcoming people at Bryan and Kathy’s house for a gathering (21033 Fowlers Mill Circle, Ashburn, Virginia). If you think you will be coming to their house after going to the viewing, or instead of attending the viewing, please let us know so we can make preparations.

The burial will be at Mount Olivet United Brethren Church in Mount Solon, Augusta County, Virginia. Once those details are finalized, we will share them.

Rest in peace Dad. I love and miss you.
