Gerry was the guy who hired me... just a wonderful human being. He always had a smile and a quirky dad joke up his sleeve and never failed to use it to lighten up the room. At the same time he was one of the most intelligence people I've ever run across yet he never held it over me or anyone else. Our office, the Air Force, this country and the world was better off when he was here with us. You are missed boss.

Gerry was a great guy and so smart. His economics came from Friedman, but the care he showed to those around him was all Keynesian. I will miss him a lot.

The Tim McGraw song “Live like you were dying” seems like it could be an analogy on how Gerry ( e.g. .. sky diving, rocky mountain climbing, … loved deeper, spoke sweeter and, and, and) lived his entire life that no diagnosis could or would ever diminish. Thanks for the role model, Gerry!

Gerry was living proof of how fine a person can be. He was a great supervisor and mentor to the people in his charge, a loving husband to his wife, and father to his children. He was also a good friend to us who worked with him at AFDW and The Pentagon. A great colleague! The character of the life he lived might be summed up in a few words: he was sincere, he was earnest, he was loyal. We'll all miss his light-up-the-room smile. When you are at your final resting place at Arlington, I'll make sure a Wreaths Across America Wreath is always placed at your columbarium niche.

Gerry was the consummate friend, whether it was inside the office or outside of it. From office gags about the Dunning-Kruger effect, Captain's Log, Webster’s definition of Pentagon work, Emperor's clothes, What's that button, etc., Gerry often had us in stitches. But more importantly, he was a great friend that was always available for a talk. He shared stories about the love of his family, faith and carpe diem attitude. While I will forever miss his contagious smile and laughter, I’m Blessed to have known him. Thanks for the laughs, Gerry - we love you!

Celeste and I are so lucky to have had Gerry as a friend, and you, Michelle, so very very lucky to have him as a husband. He was the most caring person we ever met. We will truly miss our dinners together and his corny jokes! We could not have asked for a more special wedding anniversary than spending a week with Gerry and you on our cruise to the Caribbean...so thankful to Gerry for talking us into going. We will miss him immensely. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of Gerry's family.

I met Gerry in the infamous Roadrunner club at Texas A & M. Boy did we have great fun! The only 2 things we had in common were running and drinking! Gerry was always smiling, witty, humorous, kind and generous. All the undergrads never had any money and Gerry would help cover the tab. I was also impressed for his love of his children. He would take great lengths to see his daughter flying twice a month to see her. What a wonderful gift!

I don’t know how to start. Despite all that he went through, Gerry always had an amazing attitude, infectious smile, and wonderful sense of humor. I’m going to miss stopping by his desk on the way in or out of the Pentagon. No matter what was going on, he always had a way of making you feel better about things.
To Gerry: I’m so glad that I had a chance to meet you and share a little bit of our lives together. If there’s a Heaven, I hope you get a chance to meet my Dad up there, and share some really bad dad jokes – he and you will get along so well. I already miss you my friend, but I’ll never forget you.
Rest in peace, brother.

Michelle and family, I was very saddened to hear of Gerry's passing. One of the best things I did in the Owls was to hire Gerry. Smart, witty, and always willing to discuss an issue, he was a perfect complement to and enhanced the team. I got to see him briefly before my retirement and know that things have been tough. I know he is at peace now and can only offer my prayers and condolences to all of you at this time.
With great respect and prayers,
Scott Wheeler
