Please share a memory of Hiawatha to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Hiawatha M. Jones, of Sterling, VA passed away on January 6, 2024 at his home with his devoted wife, Sinead of 36 years by his side. He is survived by his wife Sinead, his mother-in-law Helen Smyth of Ireland, his sisters AEolus Brooks of Media, PA, Joyce Carter of Newport News, VA, sister-in-laws Carrie Jones of Parrish, FL, Pat (John) Lloyd and Aileen (Brian) Kennedy of Ireland, brother-in-laws Neal Smyth of England and

Tom Smyth of Ireland as well as several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a great-great niece and great-great nephew.

Hiawatha, better known as “Hi”, was born on August 30, 1930 in Roxbury, Virginia to Walter and Sarah Jones. He grew up in Charles City and Newport News, Virginia. He served 4 years in the United States Navy where he was able to develop his love of photography. He worked at Brenners photo company in DC while attending American University. He later acquired a job with the Federal Government in the USGS (United States Geological Survey) and therein made his career.

“Hi” was a kind-hearted man with many hobbies including photography, gardening, home-improvement projects and genealogy. “Hi” and Sinead had several yorkies during their marriage: Beag, Fionn, and Finn. He enjoyed walking them, taking them to the vet, and having them as his companions. He took great interest in caring for his “fur” babies.

In 2019, “Hi” had a stroke and although it was a challenging road during the last 4 years, he persevered. Sinead was by his side every step of the way, even during her own medical challenges. His last dog Finn was truly his calm, always by his side providing a sense of comfort.

“Hi” was predeceased in death by his parents, Walter and Sarah Jones, his brother Kolster Jones, sisters Iva (Benny) Dix, Mattie (Edward) Hanes, and Gloria (Harrison) Black, brother-in-laws Henry Brooks, Joseph Spencer and Maurice Carter, sister-in-law Martha Smyth and nephews Rodney Dix and Nathan Smyth.
