Jim was the kindest, most caring and generous person I’ve ever known. He was in a very real sense a surrogate father; not only to me but many others. Jim was an acquaintance, turned mentor who became a life long friend. Thank you for teaching us how to be men. May you forever rest in peace. Randy & Pam Whelan

Uncle Jim was always fun to be around. He enjoyed people and had a hearty laugh that could fill a room. When he and my dad brought Wayne and I into the Pennsylvania hunting group as young boys, it was a rite of passage. They and the others treated us like the men we would someday become.
Uncle Jim was an amazing hunter. My thoughts made more noise in the woods than his footsteps. As we would enter a forest his mind entered a place that he had been going to with my dad for many years beginning when they were boys with their dad. I never heard a cross word between them, but I heard many stories of younger days when that wasn't true.
One story was when my not-yet Uncle Jim was being chased by my dad and he ran into a room and locked the door. As he stood there admiring his craftiness, the door flew open shattering the door jamb. They immediately became best buddies trying to solve how to fix a door jamb before Grandpa got home.
Another story was playing baseball in high school. The opposing team decided to give him an intentional walk. He went to the dugout and found the longest bat his team had. He proceeded to hit an inside-the-park home run into right field. As he explained it, "It really helped that the right fielder was over talking to the center fielder." This was followed by yet another hearty laugh.
Now that he and my dad are gone, I can't help but wonder how many of their stories are gone forever. I guess my point is, make stories with your family and friends while you can. And don't forget to pass them on to the youngsters.
