Harold Bernard, Jr. of Potomac Falls, Virginia on December 9, 2009. He was predeceased in the past year by his adoring wife of 50 years, Florence Valeski Bernard, and his son, Bruce Harold Bernard, in 1997. Survivors include three daughters, Susan Beerman, Ashburn, VA, Sharon Drier, Oak Hill, VA, and Michele Schuette, Rockville, MD and three sons-in-law and his eight grandchildren, John, Lauren, Kelsey, and Kendall Beerman, Harrison and Mitchell Drier, and James and Clayton Schuette.
Harold attended Duke University and Duke School of Law, earning his BA in 1953 and Juris Doctorate in 1956. He then served honorably in the US Army. He launched his career with the National Labor Relations Board as a labor relations trial attorney in Philadelphia, PA. In 1979 President Carter appointed him as a federal Administrative Law Judge for the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, DC,. Judge Harold Bernard, Jr., settled labor disputes from the bench for 20 years.
An avid outdoorsman, Harry enjoyed running marathons and 10 K races, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and skiing. His favorite haven was the family vacation home in Duck, North Carolina. He traveled the world by land and sea with his wife, Florence, and together they enjoyed fine wine and gourmet food. Harold was most passionate about his family, his appreciation of Mother Nature and his career. If you picture a beautiful sunset over the sound in Duck or a magnificent view on a cloudless day from the summit of Mt. Washington, his spirit is there. He is now reunited with his wife and son and eternally at peace.
The family is holding a private gathering on Sunday, December 13, from 1 to 4 pm. Please email sdrier@cox.net for details. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to Capital Hospice, 4715 North 15 th Street, Arlington, VA 22205.
