RUSH, ETHEL VIOLA MACKALL AGE 96 May 28, 1915 - July 15, 2011 Ethel Viola Mackall Rush, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend formerly of Negley, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and more recently of South Riding, Virginia passed away peacefully and quietly on July 15, 2011 at her home in South Riding, VA surrounded by her loving family. She was 96.
She was born at 3:00 AM on May 28, 1915 in her grandmother's home in Middleton Township, Columbiana, Ohio near Negley, Ohio. Ethel was one of 12 children, the third child and first daughter of the late Harry Raymond and Permelia Jane Brittain Mackall Her parents owned the Negley Filling Station in Negley, Ohio. She graduated from East Palestine High School in East Palestine, Ohio in 1932. Ethel moved to Detroit, Michigan after graduation to continue her education in accounting. Upon her return home to Negley, Ohio she held a position with the Purol Co., on East Taggart Street, East Palestine, Ohio. At 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 14, 1934 at the United Presbyterian Parsonage of East Palestine, Ohio the Rev. P. E. Rose united in marriage Jacob Charles Rush of Allison Park, Pennsylvania and Ethel Viola Mackall. They made their home in various neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania eventually settling down in Shaler Township, Glenshaw, Pennsylvania where she worked in Kittman's Department Store and then later in the Tax Department of Shaler Township before retiring in the early 1990's. For many years she was a member of Glenshaw Presbyterian Church in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania. When she moved to Fairfax, Virginia in 1994 she became a member of Pender United Methodist Church. She most enjoyed visits with family and friends, playing the organ, telling stories and an occasional game of cards.
Mrs. Rush is survived by her only son, Ronald Charles Rush, (Margaret) of Chantilly, Virginia. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her three grandchildren, Darlene Lyn Rush (William) Bell, Jeffrey Allen (Nancy) Rush, Michael Charles (Michelle) Rush, one step-daughter, Michelle Fitzsimmons, and eight great-grandchildren all of Chantilly, Ashburn or South Riding, Virginia. She was an inspiration and will be deeply missed by her former daughter-in-law, Clara Lou Williams Rush.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Charles Rush; a son, Jacob Charles Rush, her parents, Harry Raymond and Permelia Jane Brittain Mackall, two sisters, Evelyn Virginia Mackall Holzer Sheely and Ida Alice Mackall; eight brothers, Raymond Ebert Mackall, Gilbert James Mackall, Kenneth Leroy Mackall, Edward Powers Mackall, Wayne Allen Mackall, Samuel Brittain Mackall, Donald Harry Mackall, and John Wilbur (Jack) Mackall. She has one younger sibling, a sister, Dorothy Gertrude Mackall Whistler Dickey, living in Columbiana, Ohio and many nieces and nephews.
At Ethel's request no viewing will be held. A memorial service will be held at Pender United Methodist Church, 12401 Alder Woods Drive, Fairfax, Virginia 22033 on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 2:30 PM. Interment will be held at Dorseyville Cemetery, Corner of Saxonburg Boulevard and Cemetery Road, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she will be laid to rest on July 20, 2011 next to her late husband, Jacob Charles Rush, with whom she was married for almost 60 years. Their son, Jacob Charles Rush, is also buried in the family gravesite at the foot of his paternal grandmother, Anna Rush.
