Carl M. Sloan of Herndon, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 after a brief stay at Reston Hospital. He was united in marriage to N. Ruth Sloan on December 6, 1958. His life-long career working for the railroad allowed him to travel to nearly all of the states in the US, to include Alaska. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and retired from Amtrak in Washington, DC. His hobbies were golfing, billiards, antique car restoration and crossword puzzles. He loved to watch NASCAR, boxing and football. In his youth, he enjoyed drag racing on weekends at a local dragstrip and throughout his life remained an automobile enthusiast. Later in life he was active in community affairs and doted on his beloved grandson. He was a generous and outspoken man, a true American. He served his country in the Army's 101st Airborne during Sept 1954 until June 1956 where he attainted the rank of Staff Sergeant. Carl was the beloved husband of the late N. Ruth Sloan, loving and devoted father of Carl E. Sloan of Gainesville, VA, brother of Ruby J. Vlcek of Pensacola, FL and Carolyn L. Hardin of Dayton, OH and the late Kenneth E. Sloan, proud grandfather of Ryan M. Sloan, of Gainesville, Virginia. Carl was a son, a brother, a father, a papaw, and a friend who will forever remain in our hearts and memories. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 4 th from 10-11am at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA, where funeral services will be held at 11am. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2pm at Culpepper National Cemetery. Contributions in his name may be made to the Disabled American Veterans organization.
