Obituary of Kimberly Elaine Bourne
Please share a memory of Kimberly to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The world is less vibrant with the death of Kimberly Elaine Bourne on February 15, 2012. While there will be mourning at the loss of her, there also will be a collective smile from all of those who have known this remarkable, vivacious woman. Kim was a loving fiancée, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, co-worker and friend -- but she could never be defined (or confined) by these roles. Kim was a true free spirit in a world too often dulled by sameness and conformity. No one will ever "vaguely remember" Kim because Kim's infectious smile, bright eyes, and boundless energy will be forever seared in that person's memory.
Kim was the embodiment of the French expression "joie de vivre" (joy of living) and she embraced life with an unparalleled passion. With gifted artistic talent and naturally dramatic skill, she brought an immense creativity to all aspects of her life. Kim's unique flair and presence was reflected in everything from her manner of speech and style of dress to her home decoration and business logo. The words "sedate" and "Kim" probably will never collide in the same sentence. Like Don Quixote tilting at windmills, Kim could be impractical, but her intentions were always brave and exceedingly heroic. It was something she knew and embraced about herself, at one time even sporting personalized license plates displaying her own creative spelling of quixotic. She was fun and outrageous and this is who she wanted to be, her own unique version of Auntie Mame, and she succeeded without concession.
Kim's "joie de vivre" was evident early on with her childhood association with the Herndon Recreation Association swim team and the Trinity Presbyterian Church Sonshine choir. As an adolescent, she was involved in the Parkview High School productions of Taming of the Shrew and Fiddler on the Roof and as an adult, she was the kangaroo mascot for her office softball team. Kim enjoyed traveling and was particularly excited by her trips discovering waterfalls in Hawaii and camping in Canada.
Kim found an outlet for her creativity in her work as a freelance computer graphics artist. She studied graphics arts in Canada, and she bravely became an entrepreneur starting her own business in less than certain economic times. Her consulting business ultimately led her to her longtime consulting position with Professional and Scientific Associates (PSA) where she assisted in the development and production of government related proposals. Kim was particularly proud of her work on the slide show for the dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington DC.
Following a brief illness, Kim (age 45) of Leesburg died with her parents at her side. While her physical body may have finally reached its end, Kim's incredible spirit will never die and instead lives on in the uncountable lives that she so deeply touched. Kim was the beloved fianceé of Wayne Miner; a loving mother to Jacob Polston, and delighted grandmother to Isaiah and Lily Polston. She was the daughter of Jane and Kenneth Bourne; sister of Karen (and PJ) Rubal and Shannon and Sean Bourne; step-daughter of Mimi Bourne; aunt of Jessica and Keir Allison-Bourne and Connor Bourne; niece of Mary and John Hawley, David and Maureen Bourne, Judy and Larry Neff, Dan Duzan (deceased); and cousin of Eric Duzan, Rob Neff (deceased), Laurie Bame, Dawn Duzan, Chris Woodruff, and Amy Patton. She was predeceased by her grandparents Phyllis and Hugo Duzan and Lavaun and Don Bourne. She will also be missed by her fiancé's children, Karina and Trevor Miner; many friends; a wealth of clients and co-workers, and her kitties, BooBoo (deceased) and Fruitloop.
Kim lived with enthusiasm, she laughed often, and she loved deeply. In honor of Kim's memory, please give someone you love flowers, hugs, and laughter.
A memorial service celebrating Kim's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 651 Dranesville Rd., Herndon, VA. Inurnment private.
