Martin Wohl, 1930 - 2009 Transportation economist Martin Wohl died at his Fairfax, Virginia, home on Tuesday, July 21. Dr. Wohl achieved international recognition for his understanding of transportation economics with the publication in 1965 of The Urban Transportation Problem , which he co-authored with John Meyer and John Kain of Harvard University. This was the best-selling book on transportation issues that had ever been published at that time. It has been hailed as the first attempt to compare the full costs of different transportation modes with scientific objectivity. Dr. Wohl was a prolific author on matters of transportation economics. He authored or co-authored five technical books in this field that were published by McGraw-Hill, Harvard University, John Wiley & Sons, and Heath Lexington Books. His writings include more than 70 refereed journal articles on transportation. Martin Wohl was married three times, each union ending in divorce. His first wife was Ann Findley Wohl; he later married Nancy Russell, and most recently Kay Hudson. He is survived by one son, Charles Wohl, daughter-in-law Martha and two granddaughters, Amelia and Diana, of The Woodlands, Texas. His other son, Richard, died in 1995. Arrangements are now being made for Martin Wohl to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial event will be arranged when interment is scheduled.
