I umpired a number of baseball games with Jay. In my early years with the association, Jay was a great mentor during the game. His positive attitude as a partner and game official made it fun and educational. I will miss him when I take the field this year.

Jan & I were deeply saddened to hear of Jays death. Our youngest son, Nick, played baseball with Steven for several years and came to know Jay as a wonderful person. Coincidentally, the baseball team that Averett University was playing was Nick's team from Hampden-Sydney College. I was at the game when I found out about the accident. I thought you would want to know that there was a moment of silence before the game and a very subdued atmosphere during the contest. Hampden-Sydney college also held a moment of silence for Jay before their Saturday home contest, and while none of our players parents knew Jay, they were very sad to here of the news. I am sorry that none of us were able to attend the service, as we just arrived back in town late last night from Alabama. Please tell Steven that I will give him a call at the proper time Again, our sincere condolences in this time of loss. I know Jay is at peace. Kerry & Janet
