Col. Norman J Campbell, USA (Ret.) Norman J. Campbell retired as an Army Colonel and subsequently served in industry and the Defense Department. He was born in East Boston, MA and graduated from Boston Latin School and Tufts University.His career in intelligence began as a civilian cryptanalyst with the War Department in 1944. Upon graduation from Signal Corps Officer Candidate School he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in 1946. He was a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College. His career consisted of a series of intelligence assignments to include Assistant Secretary of the US Intelligence Board and Executive Secretary of the Signal Intelligence Committee; Commander 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion, II Field Force Long Binh, Vietnam, 1967-1968 and Chief of the Soviet Ground Forces Division, National Security Agency. Upon retirement from the Army in 1976 he served as an intelligence analyst with the BDM Corporation and also with the Defense Intelligence Agency and Office of the Secretary of Defense as an intelligence planner and Deputy Director of the Intelligence Communications Architecture Project working with US combatant commands. His military decorations include three Legions of Merit. Following his retirement from OSD he acted as Managing Editor of the American Intelligence Journal for two years. Col. Campbell was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife Helen H. Campbell and four children, two by his first marriage to Ann Read Campbell, Mary Ann Canter of Greenbelt, MD, Paul of Baltimore, MD, Matthew of Herndon, VA and Neil of Atlanta, GA. Col. Campbell is survived by nine grandchildren. Binh, Vietnam, 1967-1968 and Chief of the Soviet Ground Forces Division, National Security Agency.
