Obituary of Ebenezer P. Aikins-Afful

Aikins-Afful, Ebenezer P., Of Herndon, VA. Fell asleep in death on May 30, 2012. He was born on June 9, 1935 in Accra, Ghana, West Africa to Eunice Aikins and Timothy Afful. He attended and graduated from Accra Government Boy's School and from Accra Academy Secondary School where he was nominated President of the student body. After graduating from the Kumasi College of Technology. He came to the U.S. where he furthered his learning at Purdue University and MIT. He graduated from MIT in 1966 with a Doctor of Science degree (ScD) in Civil Engineering. In that same year he married his best friend, Charlene Hoyt and enjoyed a loving union with her for more than 45 years. They moved to Bronz, New York, where their daughter Oivia was born and their joining together brought, in addition, his son Starr; and her daughter Helen and a beautiful granddaughter Lisa. As a civil engineer, Ebenezer worked in New York with Quirk, Lawler and Matuski, Malcolm Pirnie Engineers, and Mitre, Inc. After relocation to Virginia he began employment with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development at the World Bank. For the next 25 years he traveled internationally and frequently to work on projects that broutht clean water to people and to areas where there was little access. Ebenezer was a kind and patient husband, peaceful father and a very special brother. He was always a spiritual man, upon retiring he started regularly attending the meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. In 2010 he began having a weekly bible study with the goal of dedicating his life to Jehovah. He is survived by his wife Charlene, daughter Olivia, son Starr, step-daughter Helen, granddaughter Lisa, sister Christina and brother Joseph. A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses 1580 Beulah Rd., Vienna, VA.
