Suche mich in Deinen herzen.

I first met Hans in 1988 onboard a fishing boat. Of courses we all have stories about him. Even as he tries to come across as the ruff & gruf German guy I have a pictue of him jumpimg rope on the boat. Grinning from ear to ear. We will miss this wonderful guy. The world will have an empty spot with his leaving us.

I'm going to miss Hans an awful lot. We came to work together back in the late eighties on various factory trawlers for Arctic Alaska, culminating with the Kodiak Enterprise. This boat and crew were the favorites of my entire career, and certain people - like Hans - became friends for life. We worked hard, but we also had fun; everyone was a professional and simply enjoyed working with others that were great at their work. Hans, was great at his work. I never lost track of Hans when I stopped going to sea for over ten years; we talked periodically on the phone, and kept up with each other's life. When I moved home to Maine in 2001, we continued to talk and then one day, I was working in my garage, when in drove Hans and Honnelore, completely out of the blue! They were on a road trip to Nova Scotia, and had tracked down my new address; they decided to surprise me with a visit. Needless to say, I was surprised and happy to see them. I was saddened to hear of Hans' battle with lung and then brain cancer when I made my annual Christmas call this past year. Despite his struggle, he stayed happy and positive to the end. Every time I called, he said everything was going well and it seemed he was coming ahead. However, the last time I spoke with him, it was clear he was having trouble; I'm happy that he is now at rest, but I feel terrible for you, his family. I know you are going to miss him even more than I, and I wish you peace and comfort in his absence. Jay Cox Cape Elizabeth, Maine
