COL Robert W. Gambino, USAR, Ret., 16 November 1926 - 26 July 2012 COL Robert W. Gambino, USAR, Ret., passed away July 26th with his children by his side. He was married to his loving wife, Mary for over fifty years and is survived by: his children: Melissa of San Jose, CA; William of Herndon, VA; Leigh Muse of Leesburg, VA; his grandchildren: Kristi, Julianna, Robert, Sarah, Thomas, Nicholas, and Lauren; and his brothers: Richard and Joseph. His loving wife Mary predeceased him in 2004. COL Gambino had a long and distinguished career serving his country in the government and in the Army. He was with the Merchant Marines in the Pacific at the age of 17, and served with the Army during the occupation of Japan at 18. Upon his return to the US he married, graduated from the University of Virginia, and returned to Japan as an Army officer. Following his tour in Japan, he joined the CIA while continuing his service in the military as a reservist. COL Gambino retired from CIA as Director of Security in 1980 to work for the George H. W. Bush campaign. COL Gambino worked for the Synfuels Corporation and for Kaiser Steel before being appointed Director of Selective Service in 1991. He left that post in 1994 to become a consultant and enjoy his retirement. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 on Mon, Jul 30 at Adams -Green Funeral Home in Herndon, VA. A funeral service will be held at the same location on Tue Jul 31. Burial with full military honors at Arlington will be at a future date.
