Ruth was a superb coach and I was willing to be coachable with her. Over time, she had assessed me using her favorite Enneagram protocol. Then came heart-to-heart conversations about work, life, and post-work life. As Ruth went through retirement from EPA and I separated from Yale Forestry School, we found companionable reflections to share. One day, Ruth gave me this mantra: "Kath, do the work that only you can do."
I hear her voice telling me that every day!

Ruth Hamilton Allen and I were childhood friends. There were 4 of us little girls, all the same age that grew up together. We played cowboys and Indians [ Ruth's favorite ], dolls [ my favorite ] and had tea parties under the pear tree in my back yard. We spent hours on her grandmother's porch swing and talking. When we started school, there where fun times walking back and forth to school together on 9th Ave. After we graduated from high school, we only saw each other 2 or 3 times. This summer was our 50th class reunion. Ruth came from VA. , Bonnie, Genny and I live close where we all grow up. We had 3 days of renewing our childhood relationships. We had so much fun together but now we all are in our 60's with a few pains here and there. Ruth has one brother that lives in Pittsburgh and he had a very bad stroke this summer. I told her our guest room was always open to her. Beginning of Sept. she came up for his birthday and stayed over night in our guest room. We had dinner and talked and my husband Terry offered her his recliner and we talked way into the night. Ruth kept thanking us for the evening and kept saying, " I needed this!" She was a delightful ,soft spoken, caring and giving friend. She knew how to listen and say just the thing to meet your hearts needs. Sat. morning she was off to see her brother and then back home to VA. As Ruth left we hugged, and we talked about when we would see each other again. She called me last week and wanted to know if she could come and stay over night next Wed. We only talked a few mins. and we would of plenty of time next Wed. to catch up. That was the last time we talked. I miss you already Ruth. I'm so thankful for our renewed friendship and the time we had together these pass few months. We are praying for all her family that she loved and cared for so dearly. I am so sorry for your great loss.

Ruth and I studied together at Johns Hopkins in the early 1980's and then worked together off and on at EPA. Her cheery disposition and chatty nature made her a pleasure to be with. Our hearts go out to all the members of her circles, both family and friends.

Embracing our aging womanhood together, Ruth and I shared joy in the prospect of becoming elder in additional to growing older. Ruth inspired me toward the courage beyond fear, the wisdom beyond understanding and the compassion beyond judgement. Ruth was adept at pointing to the possibility for breakthrough in any situation, the opportunity to create something remarkable in response to any circumstance. She gazed unflinchingly at the beauty of life and our world, resolved to stand on the side of hope in the face of despair. She brought peace with her wherever she was present. Ruth is an enduring light in my life, now in memory as she was in life.

Ruth was a wonderful, caring, committed colleague that we could always count on for going the extra mile to provide key data and other scientific information to protect the health of farmworkers, farmers and pesticide handlers. She was a caring, loving person and I always loved hearing about her travels, her interesting and rewarding life, and her interest and service to others. Our heart reaches out to her family and friends at this difficult time. May they treasure her memory and the time they had with her.

Ruth and I drove from Tyson's Corner to Bethesda once or twice a month for 2 years to participate in an interfaith group. It was so inspiring to share the things we were trying to do for our communities. The conversations made the trip fun and the conversation with those in the interfaith group were informative and loving. I will miss her.

I first met Ruth at a Advanced Art Of Living Course we both took in Montreal, Canada about 6 years back. She was a good friend, always willing to help others. She was a regular at our monthly Bhajans at the local Temples in VA. She visited me and my family at my home in Bangalore, India a few years back and have very fond memories. My mom, dad and I pray for her soul and strength for her family in these difficult times. Our sincere condolences to the family and may her soul rest in peace.

I sat next to, and traveled with, dear Ruth so many times while singing with various Baha'i choirs. She wasn't a loud or demonstrative singer -- she was quiet, and subtle, but always there. Her commitment to making the world a better place was always evident, and I respected so much of what she did. She is a gentle soul and I will miss her, until we meet again. Condolences to Ruth's family during such a difficult transition. Be assured that she is near you, guiding you.
