Jim Ashwell was a wonderful man. He was always kind and encouraging, and if he kidded a bit, it always ended on a compassionate note. I know he learned to play ping pong just so he could beat me! Every friendly game would dissolve in smiles and laughter as each point went whizzing by. He was a good writer; always wanting to keep in touch. His cards to me were always funny and caring. Ah, so many aspects to cherish about our beloved Jim!

Jim Ashwell, a very special man who made a difference in so many lives. Admired and respected by all who had the privilege of being part of his life. We hope a little bit of "Ashwell" rubbed off on us all. Athletic, Smart, Handsome, Well-traveled, Entertaining, Loyal, and Loving. The best all-around athlete to come from HHS, a star and record holder at UVA, and golf extraordinaire. Jim was a crossword puzzle king: his knowledge of any subject was unparalleled. Traveled the world from Russia to Australia, crossed through the Panama Canal, drove dog sleds in Alaska, and rode the waves in Hawaii. There wasn't any place he missed seeing.
No one told a story, and he had some stories, like Jim. He enjoyed the telling as much as we enjoyed the listening. Loyal to his schools, his town, his friends, and family. Wore his HHS caps and UVA shirts with such pride. Loved life and if ever there was one woman for one man, it was Lody for Jim. Together, they raised three wonderful children and took a tremendous amount of pride in their grandchildren. Now there is an entire Ashwell family who has given so much to their communities, churches, synagogues, schools, and fellow-man - all a reflection of the values Jim and Lody instilled in each of them.
Thank you Jim for coming to Herndon and making a difference in our lives. We will miss you terribly.

Being raised by a teacher and coach is such a gift. How lucky I am to have had a person to instruct then guide and then let me soar. Thank you Dad for being the voice of reason, the giver of praise and tremendous love. You are someone to whom I owe my confidence. I am so lucky to have had you even if it was too short. I will strive to be the parent, in-law, and grandparent you were to me and my little family. I will always love you.

Mrs Ashwell our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Coach will always remain an inspiration to me thoughout my life. He taught me your character is an accumulation of your thoughts, your habits, your feelings and your priorities on a day to day basis. This determines what you do daily. Coach stated to me "talent wins games, character wins championships". Sports are a metaphor of life and lessons learned create Character and Success. May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared comfort y'all now and in the days ahead. Pizza, HHS Class of 1967 65,66,67 State Track Champions.

Ash was a great friend to both my late father and myself for many, many years. I will surely miss him. I have many fond memories of Jim that I will hang on to for the years to come. What I admired the most about Ash was his competitive spirit but even more important was the love and dedication he showed to his family. A fine man indeed. Jim Frank

Dear Mrs Ashwell. My brother Herby and myself offer our heart felt condolence to you and your family for the temporary loss of Mr Ashwell. I say temporary because I really feel that we who know and love our LORD, will someday see and be with Mr Ashwell again. Mr Ashwell was a great guy and will be missed greatly by all of us who were coached and taught by him. He was so much more than just a great coach and teacher. He didn't necessarly look at our athletic ability(thank goodness) but looked at our heart. He made me want to play for him the best I possibly could. We all greatly admired and respected, and may I add, loved him. Herby commented to me this morning that when he was filling out information about some security code, the computer asked "who was your favorite teacher"? he put down Mr Ashwell. I did exactly the same thing! Thank you Mrs Ashwell for sharing him with us. Kenny and Herby Haines

Mrs. Ashwell, as you and the children struggle through your loss be comforted in knowing that Coach Ashwell had a positive impact on many of the people he coached and taught. As a part of his teams the lessons I learned helped to sustain me through a very successful Air Force career. My memory, of him, will forever be tucked warmly away in my heart. You and the family are in my thoughts and prayers. Gene, HHS Class of 1967, 1-B District Football Champions

Dear Lodi, Greg and Linda, so many good memories of our summer vacations with your family. So many memories of Jim being a part of my family! When I was younger I used to think he was only at the school to keep an eye on me for daddy! He was a wonderful person and was always very kind and loving to me. I am so sorry for this great loss. Love, Beth
