Words seem so meaningless at this time but, words is all I have...I had the distinct pleasure of working with Kathy Hwang at Malibu Elementary in Virginia Beach. She was an exceptional human being and a pleasure to work with. Kathy's love for her students and staff was only surpassed by her love of her family. My deepest sympathies go out to Herman Jenny, and of course her grandsons whom she was in awe of! I know her time here was much too short but, I consider myself one of the lucky ones who got to know Kathy Hwang. Love and prayers, Julia

I don't know about anyone else, but Mrs. Hwang was so alive, i can't believe she's gone. So unbelievable. I graduated fr
Sanders about 3 years ago. But i STILL remember me begging my teacher to let me go read to her, even though i had already read to her that year. She would always take a picture of me with my book, print it out on her fancy camera right in front of me. That camera amazed me. After the picture was ready she would let me pick where i wanted to hang it on her wall!
Sometimes I'm not good at remembering moments, or people. But i will always remember reading to Mrs. Hwang.
I went to her visitation yesterday. I still can hardly believe she's dead. I just couldn't fully accept that it was her who was in that casket. Rest in peace, Mrs. Hwang. Please God, bless her family in these hard times. Especially pray for her husband and siblings. Love -One of your students.

Mrs. Hwang was my principle for many of the years I went to Sanders Corner Elementary School. My experience there was so great that when the county wanted me to transfer to the newly built Belmont Station Elementary School, I started crying. Luckily, I was able to stay at Sanders, and Mrs. Hwang helped me enjoy every moment. She was always there to give a warm greeting to every student at the door as they walked in. I will never forget all of the support she gave me and how she helped make me the person I am today. For that, I am truly grateful.

We are so sorry to hear about Ms. Hwang's passing. Our daughter, Sumayya was at her school last year, and in just one year, Ms.Hwang had such an impact on her. She would take the time out to talk to our daughter every morning. Our daughter also participated in the "I read to the Principal" program and still cherishes the book Ms.Hwang gave her. She will definitely be missed at the school and our prayers go out to her family.

With the saddest heart I wanted to write and say out loud how much Mrs. Hwang meant to me and my family. I moved to her school on purpose, I was one of those moms that interviewed schools and principals. We came from a school where the principal didn't know our name, the school lunch room was a food fight every day, and where no one was encouraged to care about one another. We moved to our street because it was in Mrs. Hwang's school.
She walked my boys and me through the school, asked Mr. Nick to give my boys a cookie at the cafeteria and patted me on the back when I cried. She knew me; and had my back, she understood that I and all moms like me were ready to do anything to make our children's lives better.
I truly would have done anything for Mrs. Hwang. She was someone I admired, and wanted to grow up to be like. We were all spoiled to have her and know her; I wish I could have known her longer.
We are so sorry that she won't get to retire, and spend time with the grandchildren that she adored and talked so much about. Thank you for sharing such an amazing person with us.

Before we signed the paperwork on our prospective Ashburn Farm home in 2008, we thought we should checkout the School to see for ourselves why it was rated so high on various education websites. It was a Friday in October, just after lunch, and since we did not call ahead, we were not expecting anything than maybe a "hello" from the office staff and a few pamphlets to read over.
Well, within a minute of our arrival, Kathy whisked us into her office and spent time asking about Matthew and our family. After 30 minutes, she said, "I think I have the perfect teacher for him!" She then took us on a detailed tour of the school and we were amazed how the kids respected her and greeted her with a smile. What amazed us more was how she knew EVERY kid's name!
Our family is also grateful for Kathy's support to recognize our Veterans.
We will miss seeing her in the "Drop-off" lane each morning, ensuring every kid is greeted and safely guided inside.
She is an amazing Lady and an Educator for all teachers to emulate.
We will miss you, Kathy.
Love, Joey, Kathie, Matthew, and Molly Alonso

I first met Kathleen in 2005,her first year at Sanders Corner. I had just relocated to Northern Virginia with my husband as was sure I would not find work. In late September, there was an unexpected job opening at SC and Kathleen took a chance and hired me to be the Library Media Specialist. Although I was only at SC for three years before retiring in 2008, I tell everyone that in my 39 year career, the best was saved for last. Kathleen was unwavering in her support of me and the changes I made to the library and the library program. She encouraged and challenged this "old girl" to try new things. Kathleen and I shared had personal things in common. We both had only one child, a daughter and we both had only two grandchildren. She her beloved boys and me my dear little girls. We shared many happy times out-bragging each other with anecdotes about our perfectly brilliant grandchildren. To be a leader one needs vision and this Kathleen had in spades. This combined with her genuine love of children and her gentle mentoring of her teachers made Sanders Corner the dynamic place it is. She will be sorely missed. Good bye, dear Kathleen..."and until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of His hands.

Mrs. Hwang was the principal at Malibu ES in Virginia Beach for my daughters first five years. She was a fabulous educator and role model. I was amazed that she not only knew every student by name and would greet them every morning, but she also knew their personalities. She formed a relationship with each student. Madelyn would love to read to her and it was an honor for her to read to Mrs. Hwang. My condolences to her family. I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Kathleen's family and her Sanders Corner family. I was fortunate to be a part of the SCES family when Kathleen arrived in 2005. At the time I was a special education assistant with thoughts of becoming a special educator. I remember telling her that I was thinking of pursuing this new path in my life, and she was very supportive. She told me to go for it! Well I did, and today I am working as a special educator at local school here in Ashburn. During those years when I was back in school, Kathleen would stop me in the hall periodically and ask me how my classes were going, and always offered her assistance. She was always available to give advice, help me conduct research for a paper or talk to me about her experiences as an educator. She was always very supportive. One thing I remember most about Kathleen is that she used the words "active engagement" and "differentiation" before they became popular "buzz" words in education. She always beleived that children needed to be taught in a variety of ways that stretched their imaginations, and allowed them to use their strengths. She introduced us to Ron Nash, and gave us all the greenlight to attend his conferences and develop as professionals. She believed in the sharing of ideas, collaboration and teamwork. Above all she believed in the children, and recognized the potential in all of them. She loved her job as principal of Sanders Corner, and she loved the students she worked with. Kathleen you will be missed by all who knew you. May God wrap his arms around your family and bring them comfort.

To the Hwang Family:
I got to know Kathleen initially while on teacher recruitment trips. She was always interested in recruiting the best teachers for her school and the school system. I enjoyed getting to know Kathleen both professionally and personally. While traveling and recruting with Kathleen, I found her to be genuine, caring, concerned and warm. She cared about people and had a way of connecting with not only people she knew, but also those she would meet for the first time. She often spoke fondly of her family, especially her grandchildren.
Unfortunately, I learned of her passing while watching the news in Chesapeake over Thanksgiving...I was shocked to hear the sad news. What a tragic loss to the family, community and the school system!
She will be missed by all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with you (the family) as you go through adjusting your lives without Kathleen. Although Kathleen is no longer here physically, it is comforting to know that she was loved, admired and respected. Her memory will live on forever. I remember seeing her just a few weeks ago during American Education Week when she came in and walked around the classroom observing and interacting with the children, so interested in what they were doing. To the Hwang family;
Thank you for sharing Kathy with our Sanders Corner community for the past 7+ years. She created an environment where kids wanted to go to school and could learn and succeed and be supported at the same time. I have so many memories of Kathy in the halls of school, at many, many activities and her smile when talking with the children. I also got to know her in a different light when I started substitute teaching at Sanders. Elementary students were a new age group for me, but I remember one of the first days I was on my own and getting ready to read to a class. I glanced up and Kathy was in the hallway and she gave me a smile and her "look" that let me know I was on the right track. I truly enjoyed the various projects we worked on together--especially the 5th grade promotion programs for my 2 sons. I hadn't particularly planned to do it the second time, but her persuasive way didn't leave me much choice! Now I am glad I did, because we had some of our best conversations last year while working on the event.
It is rare that you can say that someone impacted thousands of lives in a postiive way, but that is certainly true of Mrs. Hwang. All of the students who were privileged to have her for their principal will carry on her legacy.

Mrs. Hwang has been the face of Sanders Corner Elementary for me since my daughter Abby started Kindergarten seven years ago. From that day I took comfort in knowing that the school was in great hands. Mrs. Hwang was so kind and nurturing and the kids could not wait to come home and tell us how they read to her their special "read to the principal" day. Photos of the children on that day are proudly displayed on our family bulletin board as a very special day in their lives. The fact that she took time out of her busy schedule to have this moment with every child in the school speaks volumes for the type of person Mrs. Hwang was and how dedicated she was to each and every student in the school. She was also always available for me. If I had a concern I could shoot her a quick email and she'd give me a call and be the calming voice of reason that made any situation seem more manageable. Like so many moms in the area, I have a very busy schedule and knowing that Mrs. Hwang was there everyday was a tremendous source of comfort for me. It meant a lot to me to drive through the carloop everyday and wave good morning to Mrs. Hwang and to see my children stand behind her and wave goodbye to me. This tragedy also made me realize the importance of showing appreciation for the Mrs. Hwang's in your life everyday……not to let the busy-ness of your daily life stop you from taking the time to tell them how important they are to you. Mrs. Hwang, you were an amazing woman. I will miss you terribly and I will never forget you. Rest in peace.

She was an outstanding teacher and dearly loved by all of her students and their parents. Kathy was one of the best teachers I had during my 26 years of being an Elementary School Principal. Our deepest sympathy to Herman, his daughter and her family. Kathy was a very special person and will be missed by many. I will always remember her with fondness and appreciation for the years I knew and worked with Kathy.

Kathy, You were more than just an amazing principal of Sanders Corner, you were also a good friend to many, a loving Mother, Grandmother, and Wife. Your passion for leading an outstanding school and a caring community of students, teachers, and staff was so very evident. You exuded so much love for your family. You inspired everyone who had the opportunity to know you to strive for their best. You truly enriched so many lives. Somehow you even managed to instill a math problem as I post this condolence. My answer is 48 by the way. May your kind, supportive, and loving memories bring your family, students, staff, and friends peace, comfort, and strength.

We remember at Mrs. Hwang's first Back to School Night when she said something like "Our children are the sunrise and sunset and everything in between." How true this was for her as she greatly loved her own family and her students as demonstrated daily by her most kind words and actions. Our daughters, Beth and Stephanie, were extremely fortunate in having Mrs. Hwang as their dedicated Principal. We all will greatly miss her but will always appreciate the fond memories and outstanding educational environment generated from Mrs. Hwang. Our deepest condolences to Mrs. Hwang's family, friends and faculty. Sincerely, Susan, Michael, Beth and Stephanie Bleutge

I had already been the Lead Bus Driver for several years when Ms. Hwang started as Principal at Sanders Corner. My first thought before meeting her was, I hope we get along, we are going to have to work together for a lot of years. We not only got along, but the respect she showed to me, as well as all the other bus drivers was awesome. When I was promoted to another position within Transportation, she got together with all the principals within the Stone Bridge Cluster and given me a "goodbye" gift. When Ms. Hwang presented me with this gift, I was floored. This is the kind of thing that she would do for someone. I learned a lot from Ms. Hwang, being her Lead Bus Driver, so I know what she did for the students in Sanders. A wonderful teacher, principal, and friend, you will be truly missed.

I remember the first time I met Mrs. Hwang. It was our very first "Meet the Teacher Day" ever. Our eldest, Rebecca, was starting Kindergarten. I was a nervous wreck. Afraid that she'd get lost in the shuffle or miss her bus or any number of potential problems. Mrs. Hwang smiled at me with a practiced, yet compassionate patience and said "Well, we haven't lost one yet".
And just like that, my concerns evaporated. It was clear to me that Mrs. Hwang would take care of Rebecca and all the other children at Sanders. From that day forward, I never worried again, safe in the knowledge that Mrs. Hwang was there, guiding our children through these important years in their lives.
Our family is heartbroken over this, yet we cherish the memories and the impact she has had on all of us. Mrs. Hwang was a gift to our children and to our community.

Our family met Mrs. Hwang at meet the teacher day at Sanders in 2005-it was our first day as a family at public school and it was Mrs. Hwang's first official day as the new principal at Sanders Corner. She is "our" principal and that is true for so many other families in our community. Many have written about her greeting the children every day, knowing every child's name, and also saying good bye or nice weekend to them at the end of every day as well. She also celebrated ever one of their lives announcing each child's birthday personally on the school news every morning. She painstakingly took many hours to select the class assignments each year trying to ensure that each and every child was matched not only with a teacher that would help them to excel but in a classroom environment with peers that would make for an ideal situation for each child. She made every effort to make this the case for over 600 children every year. She was invested in our children, their lives and the enrichment of their minds-and our family will always be grateful that we were, for a way too brief moment in time, part of this extraordinary woman's world and very blessed to be. I had the honor to get to know her as Kathleen working on a number of projects with her from Winterfest to Mrs. Loudermilk's memorial garden, to 5th Grade Promotion. At all times, all things were always about the children, what would be best for them, what we need to "teach and Educate" them better. From raising money for promethean boards, new computers, book series in the library, playground equipment-it was always about the children. She was so fond of a scholarship program the 2009 class started as part of their "gift back to Sanders" that recognized a former Sanders Corner student who would be graduating from a local High School that year, that at our first sit down to discuss the 2010 5th Grade Promotion the first thing she inquired about was our intention on the scholarship and if we would be continuing it. She loved the idea of being able to connect our elementary school children to their future as High School Graduates who would be College Bound. But as much as I know how important her school family was to her it was getting to know her and her family that you could see how blessed she truly was. She came from a very large family and would tell me of stories of their growing up and spending time together now that they were all grown and had children and in some cases grandchildren of their own. But it was when she would talk of her beloved daughter and Grandsons that she would truly light up. She is so proud of her daughter and all she has accomplished and achieved and so happy to be here close to her and her grandsons. And about those grandsons, I am not sure there could be any greater love anywhere else-when you would hear her talk of her beloved boys or if you had the opportunity to see her with them, it was a beautiful thing to see and to see her at her happiest. Our family is deeply saddened by our loss of such a wonderful woman but we are devastated for her family knowing how much she loved them all and how difficult this much be for all of them. We are keeping the entire family, and the Sanders Corner family in our thoughts, hearts and prayers-and mostly as she would want it to be, the children.

My anxiety started when Mrs. Hwang first started talking about retiring but went in to full effect when Mikey and Emily left Sanders to go to Mill Run : ) My only peace was knowing that she would still be there to see Chris graduate ~ he had been with her since Kindergarten. I simply wasn't sure how I would get through a school year without her. There was comfort in knowing she was caring for my kids . . .
I'm certain I was a basket case on more than one occasion in her office, but she never failed to mentor . . . to encourage and to share stories of her own life being a Mom to let me know that my kids would be fine. She shared wonderful stories about her daughter and grandsons - - oh, how she loved them! She guided, nurtured, and listened to every word I had to say . . . in person, on the phone, or via email. She always made herself available.
She spoke about Chris, Mikey and Emily as if they were her own. She knew each of their strengths, learning styles and always had something positive to share about every one of my kids. She had a rock solid memory and never missed a beat. She cared so much about them and every child at Sanders.
I'll never forget the day she *recruited* me to help her with the I Read to the Principal Program. "Oh . . . Mrs. Winter! I have a job that might interest you :)" She handed over that button machine and the next thing I knew I was punching buttons for the kids. Oh my . . . surely it wasn't possible - reading with *every* kid in the school? Oh yes, she did and she made EVERY student feel special by taking their picture and rewarding them with a button and new book ~ EVERY year.
She continued this program each year without hesitation, holding Restaurant nights for book donations and reminding teachers to send students down to her office to read. She changed the button design every year and was so proud to hear that kids saved their buttons on bulletin boards at home from each year they read. They were so proud to read to her! I will really miss working with her and am grateful I was there that day, as it provided me an opportunity to see the joy and passion behind this great program.
I will certainly miss waving to you in the morning. I look at the pictures of you with my children, smiling and holding them and just wish Mikey could have his wish to build a time machine and bring you back. Our hearts our heavy, but filled with wonderful memories of our time with you at Sanders. I hope there was a basket of peppermint patties and chocolate covered pretzels waiting for you in Heaven : ) God Bless you and your family . . . rest in peace, Mrs. Hwang.

Meghan never missed the chance to get a hug from her. Donny is a "challenge" at times. He felt so supported by her. She always took the time to compliment him on something even when he was having a rough day. Not being at Sanders for 5th grade is sad for Donny. He always comments on missing Mrs. Hwang. Her last email to Donny and I was in reply to an update I sent her on him in his new school. She made his day saying how proud of him she was. There are so many memories that have flooded my heart in the past 24 hours. Every school morning Mrs. Hwang greeted us in the carline no matter the temperature...sometimes shaking her head when Mac would get out of the car in shorts in 30 degree weather! I always told her that one day her grandsons would be doing the same thing...it's a boy thing, she shook her head ! It amazed me that no only did she know every child's name who attended Sanders but how to pronounce every name correctly for the birthday announcements. I will miss our chats about the books we were reading and then sharing our thoughts about the books we recommended to each other after we read them. As an educator myself I loved my discussions with her about teaching. Kathy always inspired me to try something with my own students. Try something new was something Kathy supported full heartedly! When I talked to her about starting a news program at the school she gave me the green light and said, "Go for it!" She made Sanders a true community where teachers, students and parents were all welcome and valued! Kathy was a special woman who lived her life following the Sanders Corner creed...making a difference.
