In retirement, one of my husband's hobbies is to conduct internet searches for special friends from our younger years. Yesterday, he looked up Ellen and found this site. Ellen was a very special friend of mine when we both taught and carpooled together in Naples, Italy. She was a warm and true friend. I especially remember the care she and Norman provided to me while Paul was out to sea. I remember being included in dinners, movies and other outings while I was "home alone." She and Norman hold a warm spot in my heart. I'm so saddened to learn she and Norman were touched by Lewy Body disease. We've watched a relative and are watching a dear friend deal with this challenge. Our love and condolences go out to Norman and other of Ellen's family members. She was loved and is remembered fondly by both of us. Betty and Paul Mayfield

It is often said that you are very lucky if you can find someone who is your soulmate in marriage. Well, I was lucky enough to do that, but I also found a soulmate in a friend. That friend was Ellen. From the first time we met, there was a strong connection. From Ellen’s middle name being Barbara, both coming from NY, our fathers both working in the garment industry and both going to school in Buffalo, we knew we had a lot in common. As our friendship grew, so did our families, and our families became the best of friends. Our summers together in Bethany Beach, our holidays spent together, our trips to Kiawah and Hawaii, but mostly our everyday gabbing on the phone. Ellen’s concern for our family was genuine. She always wanted to know how everyone was doing, from our kids to our parents. She was always there for us. Ellen and I laughed a lot, we cried during difficult times, but mostly we just loved spending time together. When we were younger, we used to fantasize about moving into DC, so we could walk to museums and go shopping. We dreamed of our friendship growing old with us. There is a hole in my heart now. For my 60th birthday, the Reichs and Bravermans bought me a card with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. It says, “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart”. Ellen has left a large footprint in my heart, and I will keep her there forever. I love you Ellen.

When Ellen and I met in 2002 she became an instant friend. She was always helpful, especially as she guided me in the new job I was learning. I valued the expertise that she had as she worked with the teachers she supported. It was always fun to share stories of the children we met as we went into classrooms. Ellen could see the gifts those children had as she watched them learn. We also shared so many stories about our families that I felt close to them before I even met any of them. She loved her family. We laughed many times about Aiden calling her "Gunk, Gunk" as he began to talk. I will miss the joyful spirit that Ellen had in so many things she did. She will always be a lovely memory for me as I think of my dear friend.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Ellen's family during this time of sorrow. I had the priviledge and honor of having Ellen as my resource teacher while working for the Head Start Program. Ellen was a remarkable person and educator. She was a natural when working with children and an inspiration to other teachers. Her smile and kind words were always welcome in my classroom and her guidance, suggestions, and questioning helped me become the successful educator I am today. Ellen, you will be greatly missed. God Bless!

My thoughts and prayers are with Ellen's family. I had the opportunity to learn from Ellen when she taught at Hunters Woods ES. There is not a week that goes by that I don't do something in my classroom that I learned from her. She taught me to care for all of the children in my class and their families. She was a remarkable teacher and she will be greatly missed.

My condolences to all of Ellen's family. She and I worked together at FCPS Head Start. Ellen was an amazing teacher who not only gave children a quality education, but also nurtured and loved them, and also worked so beautifully with their parents. As a resource teacher, she supported and helped many Head Start teachers. It was a joy to work with her.

Ellen was a dear friend who we will miss having in our lives. We remember her fondly from our vacations to Kiawha, our visits to Arena and Signature theaters and many memorable gatherings with friends and family. She was always a kind, gentle and caring presence among us. We will remember her thoughtfulness and cherish the time we had together.

My heart is very sad and heavy as I write my memories of Ellen. I remember her as a wonderful, caring and thoughtful person! Ellen was a remarkable teacher of young children. She created classrooms for young children that were stimulating, designed to met their individual needs and full of love and compassion. She was a dedicated and committed advocate for indigent children and their families. After Ellen became a resource teacher for the Office of Children and Family Services, she utilized her skills to provide and design professional development opportunities for teachers of young children. She was always willing to share her professional expertise with her colleagues, as she continued to increase and enhance her own knowledge about working with teachers of young children.
Ellen was a special friend and I will miss her.

Don't you hear it? she asked & I shook my head no & then she started to dance & suddenly there was music everywhere & it went on for a very long time & when I finally found words all I could say was thank you.(Unheard Music by Brian Andreas)
Ellen had the gift of bringing the music of gentle caring, love, kindness,and thoughtfulness to everyone in her life. Her smile lit up a room and the spirit of everyone in it. For me, her friendship was special because she generously shared her gift with me. Hers was a gentle and accepting wisdom. We laughed, philosophized, and problem solved together.
She took me into the fold when I began my work in Head Start and guided me through unfamiliar waters and she guided me again through unfamiliar waters when I retired, encouraging me to "smell the flowers" and enjoy our new found freedom (including our mornings).
Ellen,I will miss you!

How can this be? It is all wrong that a person who cared and shared should be gone. Norman, Ellen loved and respected you as her team partner. And Leah and Aaron, you made your mother's heart sing. Please keep her memory alive for those precious grandchildren. Ellen was a very special person and she will be missed by many.

I remember Ellen with love from the earliest days at Buff State in the dorms, to our final year there in the apt we shared on Elmwood Avenue. Spring/early summer picnics were shared at my family's isolated property in Wilson, NY and it was always fun to bring college friends home to help decorate the family Christmas tree - these are all memories that will remain.

We 3--Andy, Marc and Eric attended Leah's 2nd or 3rd year old birthday party on Winged Foot Court. It seems like it was just yesterday. Through all the loud noise and crazy commotion of kids running/crawling around, Eric, just an infant, fell fast asleep on the carpet behind a living room chair. Ellen said she would never forget how funny that was. And we'll never forget you, Ellen!

My dear friend died today, dear Lord,
I'm sure that you must know;
The Bible says no sparrow falls
Without you saying so.
I think you'll recognize her
When she stands before your throne;
But just in case you don't
I'd like to make her presence known.
She was quite tall you see,
Her hair was turning gray
You must see thousands like her
In a normal working day.
I'm sure you will remember
She was bold, courageous and kind;
But I'd like to add a few things,
Just in case they slip your mind.
My college years were special
because of our shared dream
We dreamed our dreams of Camelot
We were a wondrous team
Her ever upbeat spirit
was the thing that just shined through
you felt it in her presence--
her big smile captured you
Please remember that she never
Spoke an unkind word to me,
And when I needed some advice
How she listened tenderly.
So please, dear Lord,
When you look down
Upon her careworn face,
Remember that you've saved for her
A very special place.
Reserved for one special lady
Who was very dear to me;
Who fits so nicely next to you.
Who will be missed eternally.

I lost a dear friend tonight…her loving family and our whole circle lost a wonderful friend tonight. I don't usually post very much on Facebook - but this loss deserves a public acknowledgement and so here it is. Ellen, as kind and loving as a soul could be, lost her battle with a very cruel, genetically linked brain disease called Lewy Body Dementia, at only 64. This once vital person, a gifted and passionate teacher of young children in Head Start and then a skillful teacher of teachers after her retirement, fought this battle for over two years. We who loved her fought it with her, encouraged her, supported her, and in the end stayed close with her and comforted her as best we could. It is one of the hardest facts of life that sometimes very bad things happen to very good people…whether they be our Ellen or beautiful, innocent young children in Connecticut or in Syria or in Israel or Palestine or anywhere. It is always so hard to understand and harder still to accept when precious lives are taken from us. In all this sadness at our loss, I hold on to a message that I think Ellen would have liked: build and embrace true friendships and treasure the people you love every single day. When you love someone, tell them…make sure they know they matter. We did that for Ellen before she left us and that is my consolation on this very sad night.

I work for Fairfax County Public Library and Ellen was a Ready to Read volunteer for about two years before she became ill. Ellen was one of my first recruits. When we met, I knew I was meeting a wonderful person and we had several lunches during the time she volunteered. I look at her as my first library mentor because she really helped me understand the Head Start community. She was a special lady and will be missed.
