John's life was full of adventures, challenges, loss and love. He was a twin but did not like the idea of anyone else looking like him. He really did not want to be called "Bill's Brother". It was always the other way around in his mind. John was always very inventive and just so it's clear; it was his idea to build the go cart with our only lawnmower engine. This did not sit well with our father and he let us know it. He loved to go hunting and spend time with dad and our uncles up at the deer shack. There was a particular incident when he was helping Uncle Russ with a practical joke that had us in stitched for years to come. John and Uncle Russ had the bright idea to throw rocks at the outhouse at the same time Russ fired the shotgun into the air. Our uncle Daryl happened to be using the outhouse at the time and needless to say that Daryl came flying out of the house with his pants around his ankles cursing everyone.
As he grew into his later teenage years he found cars. John loved everything about them, especially his '65 Ford Falcon. It was not fast but it was candy apple red, had a good stereo and his…except that he had to share it with his brother some of the time. He eventually worked his way into motor cycles and found the open road. They were fun until it put him in the hospital. As always he was helping a friend out and traded his car for a motor cycle so that his buddy could go on a date. This was the type of guy he was. He never thought twice about reaching out to help some in need. He loved to play rugby and be part of the team. He had an independent streak in him that always challenged the status quo and asked the question why. I think there is a better way.
John worked his way through school and eventually started his adult life. Adult was a very subjective term around this time since it was all about playing. He was always a dreamer of big things and fully expected that he would be president of a fortune 100 company by the age of 25. It didn't happen quite the way he planned but he did find his stride and entered the world of IT and consulting. There could not have been a better path for him and he excelled at it. One think he liked to do more than anything is tell people what to do and get paid for it. He travelled the world with his work and gained a new appreciation for the things he had. This didn't slow him down but pushed him to work harder to make a life for himself and his family.
John's children were his world. He loved the idea of being a father and to be able to teach his kids everything that he knew and more. He would take them fishing, camping, swimming, sailing and just about everything else they wanted. They were the shining stars in his life.
John always found solace in cooking and being able to provide. He loved food! He would try new recipes all the time and experiment with spices. He took after his mother and was an excellent cook. If you looked inside his pantry you were guaranteed to find whatever you needed.
He often talked about training to be a chef and someday starting his own restaurant. He didn't quite get to it though.
John struggled with alcohol for the last several years fighting off the pressures of life. Some days were good and some were not. The one thing without a doubt that blossomed from this challenge was a friendship so deep with a group of wonderful people that he never had. There was sharing and giving of each other and relationships that would stand the test of time.
John lived life to the extreme and dreamed the big dreams. He is with his father now and I am sure offering his opinion on how to make things better.

Dear Christina, Jake, Lexi, Mrs Westover, Bill, Kristy, Jack, and Katherine; To say that I am stunned and unspeakably saddened to learn of John's sudden death is an understatement. I am so, so sorry for your tremendous loss. I appreciated so many things about John-- not the least of which were his commitment to his family, friends, and work; his exuberance for life; and his ceaseless devotion to his children. Whenever I spoke to him, he had a great story about each of his children that spoke volumes about how proud he was of Jake and Lexi. John was truly one of the finest souls I've had the pleasure of knowing. My thoughts will be with all of you in the sad days, weeks, and months ahead. Warmly,
C
