Dear Brennan family,
My brother wrote this poem in honor of Karen for me and I wanted to share. He never met Karen but understands my sorrow of her passing. For you, Karen:
Though your spirit has left its mortal coil
Released from the pain you suffered with grace
No longer burdened with life's endless toil
Yet each day haunts with visions of your face
Throughout the years you served with love
As mother, mate, and friend
Standing strong when push came to shove

Bill, Ben and Matt - I shall remember Karen fondly always. The lasting memories that I have of Karen are many but the highlights are the concerts (Josh Gorban in particular) and the cooking classes at L'Academie (not sure that I ever recreated the dishes as well as François but we certainly downed enough wine during classes and back home in the kitchen to make it a hoot). Made many a friend thanks to Karen at WolfTrap events, poolside, in Boca and at ladies night of course. Have shared many a wonderful meal at Passion, Brix, and of course Jackson's (who can forget their tasty lobster rolls?). I shall think of her beautiful smile, open arms and wicked sense of humour. I can hear her again in the back of the car screaming - weeee, we we weeeee! and us all laughing until we cried. I shall miss you my friend. All my love.

I wasn't close friends with Karen for very long (about 3 years) but the time that we had was special to me and to her as well, I believe. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, she basically swooped in and took my son, Danny (8 yo) once a week to her house so that I could rest after my chemo treatments. Karen gave me many small gifts during this time and one of the most meaningful was the Survivor plant (pic posted) she gave me. She asked me if I knew what it was and I didn't. She told me it was a Survivor plant "just like you," she said. It was a baby then and had one beautiful flower. I didn't take very good care of it as I was so sick I didn't care for much during that time. But, it survived and had baby plants this summer. It has not bloomed until about this past December. I have watched that beautiful flower and thought of Karen in her very difficult journey each time I looked at it. The flower is now on its way out but I will cherish this special gift and look forward to every flower it gives me. I know each one is a gift from Karen and I can't wait to see the next one. So much love to this special lady; I have so many stories I could tell but this one was most special. My love to you, Brennan family
