Sometimes growing up through your high-school years can be tough but I had a friend it Bill that made this a little easier. He was my best friend through those years and years after. He was the best man at my wedding. I played at his wedding. I remember after our school years were finished there was nothing that I enjoyed more than to drive by his parents house and see his car parked there. I would always stop to see him. As the years went by, I became very proud of Bill and what he had accomplished with his life. I stayed in touch with Bill on the computer and looked forward to receiving a message from him. Every year I would receive a animated Christmas card from him. That would always brighten my day. There is not one day That I do not think about him. I have every message saved on my computer that he ever sent to me.Although I will never receive anymore messages from him, I will never forget him. He was the best friend a person could ever have.

To the Wahl family - we would like to express our deepest sympathies at Bill's passing. Bill was just an all-round good guy. My family grew up two doors down from Bill and his family. When I got married, Bill was kind enough to help us purchase his parents home as our very first home. We would not be where we are today if he had not helped us go through all the paperwork and finances to start us off on our life together. We will never forget his kindness. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bill was a wonderful person to work with at AOL. He always had the "can do" spirit and and made some of the toughest jobs look easy. He was always calm and kind in his manner and a delight to be around. The news of his passing came as a great shock to me. He'll be missed.

To Bill's family, and friends, It's with a great deal of sadness that I received word of Bill's passing. I worked for Bill at IBM, while he was in Harrison(1000 Westchester). He was a friendly, honest, smart, dedicated, hard-working guy......and a "self-made" man. I really respected that. And a good guy to boot. Bill shared with me that he did not have an undergraduate degree, yet he was able to qualify for the Columbia graduate school program(Master's Degree for Executives) that IBM was sponsoring at that time. I felt he -placed special significance on succeeding in that effort, because he went in without a college background. Typical of Bill, he overcame that deficit and became President of his class, and finished in the High Honors group. He was very proud of that accomplishment. It was he, who later encouraged me to take that same graduate school program at Columbia, and he then became my sponsoring executive. It was grueling, finishing that in 18 months, while still working a full time job, but Bill helped me get through it. It was also he that told me about the coming contraction in IBM's IS Executive ranks, and advised me, encouraged me, to "take my shot" with Prodigy(Trintex at the time). I was wary, but he was right.....and as Paul Harvey would say, the rest was history. One of the major forks in the road in my career.....and he again helped me take the correct path. I was very fortunate to work for some of the top IS executives in IBM & Prodigy in those years, and Bill is right at the top of the list. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. Edgar Hartmann

Dad spent the weekend of February 9 & 10 with some of his favorite people. Chloe his grand-daughter was by for a while and Jon and Patti came by Sunday to play Rummy-Cube.
On Wednesday he was with Mary Ellen driving to pick up Chloe from school when he had a massive heart attack. Mary Ellen was able to provide CPR and get him to the ER for surgery. Unfortunatly he never came back out of a coma. His family all had time to come and spend time with him in prayer over the next week. Fr. Guest came and performed last rites. He passed quietly and without pain on Tuesday evening. Most of the family had been to see him through out the day.
We all know the deep faith Bill had and trust that St. Peter opened the gates wide for him.
Thank you all for your prayers.

Dear Mary Ellen and Family, My deepest sympathy. I echo the words in the glowing tributes and condolences written here by Bill's dear friends. Bill was a friend to me from his IBM days and we became closer friends in recent years. When Bill traveled to NYC for his doctor appointments we would often meet for lunch to catch up on things and enjoy each other's company - it was always a nice surprise to get that invitation from Bill. We emailed pretty much daily, as Bill did with many good friends, and it was always something to look forward to. Bill sent cultural, technical, humorous and serious mail, often along with some witty quips that would bring out a laugh. Bill often discussed many diverse topics such as his renewed interest in the Latin Mass, DooWop songs and 50's cars, Oktoberfest music, and and recently he sent an email concerning quantum theory and consciousness that left me scratching my head - he probably intended that and is still smiling over it. So Bill was part of my day that I looked forward to and I no longer have. I wish I could get one more email from Bill but I know I won't. Instead I will have wonderful memories of a dear friend with an incredible range of skills and interests, and most especially his gift to make everyone feel uniquely important about themselves. Bill will long be remembered in my thoughts and prayers. I grieve with you in his passing and am comforted in knowing with you that God has called him home to Heaven. Carl

To Bill's Family, our deepest sympathy. Bill was a colleague, mentor and friend. He was an exceptional talent in the information technology world and a superior business man. Bill's vision along with his ability to apply common sense to a client's business need was a winning combination. I worked with and for Bill for many years. He was always professional, exacting the best out of people and teaching. Bill understood talent management and the power of focusing on the client. Bill was a friend, concerned about you and your well being. Many times after long days of work, we talked about our families over dinner. Bill would take out pictures of his children and light up while discussing their accomplishments. We shared common values of faith and family. Bill embodied the meaning of a 'great man' in his values and the way he lived life. Too early, my friend, to leave. I'm sure you are already on another mission. Peace!

I was so very saddened to learn of Bill's passing. Bill brought me into AOL in November 2001 as a Director and a direct report to him. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity he gave me. A brillant man and light years ahead of many he worked with. Over the years we kept in contact, exchanging Christmas cards and sharing emails - many of which were jokes and animal stories. Bill, Bob and I would exchange emails almost every week and I will miss seeing his name in my 'inbox.' My deepest and heart felt symphathy to the entire Wahl family.

I also worked for Bill early in my career with IBM. He was one of the first executives I met as I was beginning my own leadership development and I will never forget how he influenced me in how I thought of being a leader at IBM. He was so bright and full of ideas to make things always better. And his constant belief that anything was possible permeated through his organization. It was an honor to learn from him and work for him. My sincerest sympathies to Bill's family. Carolyn Maher

It was a privilege to know Bill for 30 years at both IBM where our paths crossed often and subsequently at AOL. His intellect and drive were admired by all and I was fortunate to share many meals with him over the years and enjoyed his sense of humor at the end of the business day. So very many memories flash through my mind. Thankfully we've kept in touch via email over the past 9 years since I moved back to Canada. I will miss him being a part of my life.

To Bill's Family an Friends, I worked for Bill at IBM for a number of years, as a manager in his organization and a member of his staff. He was a terrific leader and a personal mentor to me. I learned a lot from Bill about sticking to priorities and working in the complexity of a large organization. Over time he became a true friend and someone I could reach out to and trust for advice. I will always remember him as someone who made great contributions to the business and who inspired me to strive to do the same. My sincerest sympathies, Skip

Dear Mary Ellen, Patty, Bill, Monica, and Michael, I was shocked and saddened by Bill's passing. I first met Bill in 1985 when he interviewed me for a Technical Assistant position working for him in IBM in Harrison, New York. We began working together in April, 1986. I was immediately in awe of how smart he was, how hard he worked (he seemed to never get tired!), and how focused he was on getting things done and on the people in his huge organization. He also had a terrific sense of humor and we even had some laughs while working on some very tough problems! Bill had the greatest influence on my career of anybody I have worked for in IBM in 35 years. He often talked of his family - I felt like I knew all of you even though I had only met Patty. In the last e-mail I received from him about 2 weeks ago, he mentioned what a challenge it was keeping up with his 6 year old granddaughter and how much fun she was. My sincere condolences to the entire Wahl family. Bill will be greatly missed. Helene Yagoda
