I'll never forget the beautiful and stylish lady who arrived at my door with a bottle of wine and welcome gift when we first moved into the neighborhood! It was a difficult time for our family and it meant so much to be welcomed that way after 11 moves in 10 years! Roberta was always so kind and thinking of others! I miss you dear friend...You live on in our hearts and in your beautiful son who looks so much like you when he smiles!!

We first met Roberta when she and Kevin returned to Virginia in 2008 and then most recently just 3 months ago. We were touch then by her grace and courage, and regret we don't have more time to spend with her.
Kevin our thoughts and prayers are with you and Ian. I came across this poem below I hope you can find some peace in the words.
God's Garden:
God looked around His garden And He found an empty place
He then looked down upon the earth And saw your precious face
He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest;
God' s Garden must be beautiful He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain
He knew you' d never ever Get well on earth again.
So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered " Peace be thine "
Then He took you up to Heaven With Hands so gentle and kind.
It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you The day God welcomed you home.
For Roberta.

I met Berta in the Fall of 2010. I had seen her around the halls of Iain's school, but it wasn't until Iain was placed on my soccer team that I met the Mackintosh family. A couple practices into the season, Roberta whispered to me that Iain had a crush on my daughter, Katie. At that point, the two kids became fast friends, and frankly, so did our families. We joked about how the kids would one day marry, and Roberta would always joke only after they had gotten their MBAs! Roberta and Kevin pulled Katie into their lives, and when Gemma arrived, Katie fell that much more in love with the Mackintosh clan. Roberta was always so thoughtful to buy gifts for Katie when they traveled and for holidays, and she really treated her like a daughter. My son, Mitchell, was the proud recipient of all the "cool" clothes Iain had worn, as Roberta was so thoughtful in handing down Iain's beautiful clothes to Katie's younger brother. Her warmth and generosity was like no other. I only hope we can be to Iain what Roberta, Kevin and Gemma have been to our kids. I'm so thankful for the chance to get to know, even a little, this beautiful, loving and talented lady.

A beautiful, strong, incredible woman, Roberta, as I always have said, got the beauty AND the brains in the family. She excelled in all that she endeavored. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone and was loved by all. We shared the same middle name of Veronica, our grandmother's name. Her parents were my Godparents. More than a cousin, Roberta was a sister and a friend. So many stories and memories come flooding in. I hold these in my heart and take solace in them. It was heartening to see so many relatives and friends surrounding her in her last hours. My sympathies and prayers to Kevin and Iain and Gemma and all who loved her as I have.

Roberta and I worked together at Verizon. I was amazed at how well she balanced life, her family, work and battling cancer. She could do it all and still have time for a smile and laugh over dinner. What truly amazed me is how supportive Roberta was when I got cancer. Dealing with her own battle, she took the time to come to New York and help me. I was sponsoring a Brain Tumor Team to walk in NYC last June. Roberta took the train from DC to NYC and walked with us and you'd never know that she was fighting her own battle - she was there to support a friend and I am so grateful to her. Not only for being there, but also for sharing her experience and showing me the fire to fight. I'll miss you!

> Roberta (Berta) Veronica Mackintosh passed away peacefully on February 28th 2013 at home in Reston.
>
> Berta, born in Newark, NJ in March of 1962, received a B.S. in Biology from Stonehill College, MA and moved to the Washington DC area in 1987. She began her career with Dialcom, moved to MCI in 1990 and was quickly recognized there for her positive leadership and exceptional vision. Berta was appointed Executive Director of Verizon in 2005, and was most recently leading a team that spearheaded all Solutions, Vertical and Horizontal marketing efforts.
>
> Her great love of travel and exploring new places led to her marriage to Kevin in Siena, Italy in September 2001. Eighteen months later heralded a move to England to live and her son, Iain, was born in October of 2003. In 2008, the family returned to the Reston, VA area and she continued to work with the corporation. In late 2012, her work was recognised by CMO John Harrobin when she was awarded the VES Marketing Leadership Award.
>
> Berta was a caring mother and loving wife and made countless friendships during her career with Verizon. Her favourite evenings were at home near a roaring fire and making her famous cheese plates. She reveled in visits from her many friends and her large extended family, watching the wine flow and the jokes get worse. She was loved by all who knew her and showed great strength, courage and dignity during her struggles with cancer. Kevin, Iain and Gemma will deeply miss her.
>
> Berta leaves a legacy of global friendships and a loving family.
