Bennett, Elizabeth Anne Herndon Of Herndon, Virginia Elizabeth Bennett ("Libby") passed away at the age of 89 on April 5, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Libby was born in Fredericksburg, VA, to the late Rosalie M. and William M. Herndon. Her family moved to Alexandria, VA in 1935 and she graduated from George Washington High School in 1939. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg for two years before transferring to George Washington University. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority at GWU. Prior to WWII she worked at the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and later at the Military and Naval Welfare Service Division of the Eastern Area Headquarters of the American Red Cross in Alexandria, VA. During WWII Libby worked with the Air Transport Command in Miami and served in the Navigation and Briefing Division until the end of the war in 1946. After the war she worked briefly with PCA-Capital Airlines before returning to the ATC to assist in the preparation of the military history of the 503rd AAF Base Unit. It was while working for the ATC in Miami that she met a pilot who would later become her husband, Richard Bennett. Mrs. Bennett moved to Herndon with her husband in 1951. While raising a family of four children, she was active in her church, Trinity Presbyterian; PTA's; and she was a Charter and Life member of the Fairfax County Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary. Libby was also instrumental in forming the Capital Airline Pilots' Wives Club which later became the UAL Wives Club. She also served as a substitute teacher at Herndon Elementary School and as a Temp at SBS. Survivors include three children, Dr. Jean Bennett Eddy and husband Brewer of Poquoson, VA; John Noble Bennett and wife Betsy of Sterling, VA; Michael Herndon Bennett and wife Kimberly of Sterling, VA; three grandsons and one granddaughter. Survivors also include one sister, Wilhelmina Westbrook of Waukesha, WI; and many nieces and nephews. Libby was predeceased by her husband, Richard J Bennett ; her son, Richard A Bennett; and her sister, Anita Beasey. Family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Sunday April 7, 2013, at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street Herndon VA, 20170. A funeral service will held the following day at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 651 Dranesville Road Herndon VA, 20170, starting at 1:00pm. Online condolences may be left at www.adamsgreen.com
