Mr. Byrd...What a Hard worker he was. I grew up with him, since he and my dad were friends. He and my dad were from the "old-school", where you worked from sun-up to sun-down. I spent MANY LONG days in the hayfields around Great Falls, with my dad and Mr. Byrd. I was always relieved when Mr. Byrd showed up because that man would do the work of 5 men, so I ALWAYS felt some relief when I would see him pull up in the hayfield. He was soft-spoken but he was also a "gentle-giant". He was always calm, cool and collected. I always thought about how he would be mad, but I never saw him mad. I don't think that he knew his own strength. But, he always was around to help and he never complained. He loved working with his hogs and 4-H groups. He was the "go-to" guy when you needed help. I had lost touch with him since my dad died back in 1997, but I have never forgotten him and I have thought of him often. I hope that he and my dad are now back together in a "heavenly-hayfield" in the sky.
GOD BLESS you, Mr. Byrd

I knew Mr. Byrd for over 35 years. The one thing thats always struck me about Mr. Byrd was his soft gentle voice. He was a large man and a powerfull man. He did heavy work by himself that two average men couldn't do. He used to come to the store where I worked for 25 years and if you heard him talking even though you didn't see him you knew right away Mr. Byrd is here. That voice was one of a kind, so soft, so gentle coming from a man who was so large in size.
He was a carpenter all his life but not just a run of the mill kind, he was a expert tradesman. Ask most anyone in the Northern Virginia area who was the best carpenter around and chances are 99 out of a 100 will answer Mr. Byrd. He wasn't just known for the quailty of his work but also the amount of his work. You hear stories all the time of people saying they work from daylight to dark. Mostly non-sense in most cases but not in the case of Mr. Bryd, he did indeed work from daylight to dark in his working years.
During the day he was doing his carpenter work. Once home from a days work he would tend to pigs he raised for the 4H kids. He was well known for rasing the best. Its hard to know how many of his pigs won the blue ribbon at the 4H fair but there were many.
After tending the pigs came his pride and joy, his garden. His garden was a sight to see. 200 foot rows. He planted a 1000 tomato plants each year. His crop was unbelievable. His garden was so large and so good people would pull in his driveway and ask if they could merely walk up to it to get a better view of it, it was that awesome. He would work this garden till dark most evenings. His garden brings me to my best memory of Mr. Bryd.
I too planted a garden, nothing like his, just a small garden. We used to tease each other on who is going to grow the biggest tomato. He used to bring baskets of tomatos to the store to give away. Many large 1 and 2 pound tomatos. He had tons of them. He always enjoyed telling me lookie here, now those are tomatos. He told me once you keep trying and you'll get some big ones too with a big grin on his face. For years I kept trying but never did I get tomatos like his. Then one year I decided to cheat, yes it was the only way I was ever going to grow a larger tomato than Mr. Byrd. One year I ordered some special seeds called Mega Tom. Out of all those seeds I wound up with one living plant. I fed that plant Mircale Gro like it was going out of style. I stripped all the tomatos off that plant except for one. Now I had this big tomato plant growing and feeding only one single tomato on it and it was really getting big. Finally it was time to pull this one big tomato off the vine and it was a big one. I decided to take it down to the store where I worked and weigh it. By sheer luck of all the people who would be at the store was one and only Mr Byrd. We weighed the tomato and it was at 3 pounds. It looked huge however. I held it in my hand and said Lawrence have you got any in your garden this big. He says well no BUT I do have a 1000 plants in my garden with one amd two pounders. I said yes you got a 1000 plants but you don't have one tomato as big as this one. We both broke out laughing and that was the only time I ever grew a tomato bigger than what Lawrence grew and I had to cheat to do it. We talked about that one tomato for many garden seasons afterwards and we always had a good laugh about it.
The last time I saw Mr. Byrd was last summer. His wife brought him by my work and I went out to the car to talk to him. His health had given him alot of problems over the past few years but he looked like the Mr. Byrd I always knew. He had alittle dog in his lap that he was petting. He said I can't work much anymore so this is my best friend during the day now. We talked of that big garden of his and what he had been up to. He told he couldn't do what he used to do. I said Lawrence how long have you been working, he said since he was a child. I said well don't you think 60 years of hard work is enough, maybe its time to take it easy. he said well yeah but I like getting out there and doing something. I said well you can but your gonna have to do it alitte slower now. He agreed. We talked abit more, had some good laughs and then away they went. That was the last time I ever saw him. Today his work is done, he is finally getting that long overdue rest he never took his whole life. One thing is for certain, who ever knew Mr. Byrd will never forget him, he was one of a kind, a true Gentle Giant..
