Obituary of Patricia Overbey Gilbert

Patricia "Pat" Gilbert Patricia Overbey Gilbert, 83, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2013 in Reston, VA following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Pat was born on August 26, 1929 in Appleton City, MO to William "Red" and Grace Langford Overbey. Pat moved to Colorado in 1952 with her husband Glenn Gilbert. She attended the University of Colorado, ending her studies twelve credits shy of a Bachelor's degree in order to raise her three sons. Pat was active in Planned Parenthood and other community service organizations. In 1975, along with partners Sally Holloway and Marilyn Reed, she owned and operated Encore!, one of Boulder's first consignment clothing stores, for 13 years. In 1970, the Gilberts moved to Kabul, Afghanistan. While living overseas, Pat was diagnosed with breast cancer. Successful treatment in Beirut allowed her to be cancer-free for the next 40+ years. While in Kabul, Pat used the bridge skills she'd honed on the card tables of Boulder, to win the Afghanistan Bridge Championship in 1971. In 1972, the Gilberts returned to their beloved home in Sunshine Canyon. She is survived by her brother Bill Overbey of Shenandoah, IA; son Ben (Kelli) Gilbert of Montrose, CO; Charlie (Terri) Gilbert of Reston, VA; daughter-in-law Cindy Gilbert of Shawnee, KS; and grandchildren Elizabeth, Stephanie, S, Daniel, and John Gilbert. Pat was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, her sister Martha Merriman, her son Allen, and her dear friend George Habicht. A memorial service will be held on June 25 at 10am at Frasier Meadows, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (225 N.
