Mr. & Mrs. Walker dedicated their lives to youth, not only their four children - the children of our entire town. As I get older, I come to further appreciate the enormous commitment and impact they made. I was priviliged to compete against Mr. Walker's teams when younger and to know him as an adult. My impression of Mr. Walker at age 12, 21 and 40 was the same - he was a cool guy and one of the good ones. I close my eyes and see him - bat in hand, a cigar in his mouth putting us thorugh our infield drills. Mr. Walker, you will be missed - you lived a life that made a difference for many.

As friends of Dwight and Lewis it was a pleasure to get to know Mr Walker. He was a neat guy to talk to and clearly one heck of a Dad when you see the kind of men he raised. We are very sorry for your loss of a great man.

Although I've haven't spent much time with my East Coast family over the years, I can tell you that each visit left me with vivid memories...my favorite is Thanksgiving Day 1981. Amid the buzz of activity, Uncle Doug, unbeknownst to my Aunt Susanna, went into the kitchen and "borrowed" the freshly fried giblets. He returned to watching football, ate each morsel one at a time, and licked his fingers. It was not too long afterward that my Aunt could be heard yelling from the kitchen, "Douglas Walker, did you eat the giblets?!?!" With a smile he responded, "No dear," and motioned to the rest of us to keep quiet. Uncle Doug had a great sense of humor and was not above being a bit naughty from time to time. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family as they adjust to life without Doug. God Bless all of you.

Growing up with Lewis, Dwight, January, and Glen, the Walkers were my second family. Like they did with so many of the kids in the neighborhood, from kindergarten into high school, Doug and Susannah graciously opened their home to me. Doug (always "Mr. Walker") was such a big personality with a big smile. His love and involvement in the community was inspiring as a Herndon town council and planning commission member, President of the PTA and sports coach with the Herndon Optimist League. Not only was he my first coach, but he shared his love of baseball and football with me for many years - on and off the field. I cannot adequately express how fortunate I am to have had his presence and influence throughout my childhood.

Suzannah, Glen, Lewis, January, and Dwight....Dorothy and I send our deep and heartfelt sympathy on this sad day for you all, but know this--your sadness has already been overcome....Doug's life with you in Herndon may now have come to an end but his life with you is not finally over. This is the faith. We give thanks that we knew Doug--knew him in the community, worked with him in organizations, and yes, lost to him and his teams on the ball field! It was always nice to be beaten by one of Doug's teams! You will be in our prayers and thoughts. Gods grace to you all.....Ken and Dorothy Grimm, Gainesville, VA
