My best to all of Mary's family. I lived in McLean for many years, until last Spring. Mary and I lived in the same neighborhood. Mary used to invite me in to her house for cupcakes and tea. I enjoyed our visits.

To the Starkey Family, I'd like to express my sincere sympathies on the passing of your mother. My mother, Bobbie Trimmer, was a neighbor and dinner partner of Mary's at Ashby Pond. During my mother's illness and death, Mary was a friend not only to our mom but to us. She always had a smile and a kind word to comfort us. Mary will be missed. Sincerey, Linda Sissler

Mary, my sister, my friend. It is hard to believe that you are gone but your memories will always be with me. Although my heart breaks knowing we will not see each other, there will always be a special place in my heart for you. The miles kept us apart all these years but the times we did see each other will always be special to me. I will miss our phone calls, it was always a pleasure to hear your voice.
Ellen, Joe and Ann I wish I could be with you but with my age and health I just was not able to make the trip. Know that my prayers are with you during this time and I will continue to pray for you and your Mother.
Mary, I love you and will always cherish the time we had as sisters and friends, you are no longer with us but I will never forget you.
Your Loving Sister,
Barbara

My father Glenn Smith (now, 88) was Joe Starkey's W.W. II Army buddy, infantry, Europe, through Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. After the war my father asked Joe to be his best man when he was married in 1949. He stayed in contact, since the war, since their marriages, now, 70 years since 1943.
Today my father and mother were at our home and Mary Starkey's passing prompted solemnity. We were mostly quiet, then Dad finally exclaimed, "Mary was a gutsy woman" and then described her selflessness for her family's sake, and the rigors from widowhood. Stories I have heard, many times, before, but the repetition is not an old man's forgetfulness, but a repetition energized from his awe in her actions for others.
Mary gave to others. She is one, who, after she's passed, you know the Earth has lost something of great value.
